A free steel boat could be quite expensive to dispose of. I knew a guy who said chopping it up cost more than scrap value.
In NSW you just ignore it and eventually the MSB removes it at taxpayers expense! The worse case scenario is to have the boat on the slips and it gets condemned. Then you are paying for a crane then a lowloader to cart it away!
I know of five people who have boat steel boats and have had to dispose of them due to the steel rotting away. One of the guys was working every weekend on his boat and still couldn't keep up with the rust corrosion !
I couldn't keep up with the corrosion on this one so she got scrapped.
Bought her sitting on a mooring in the Tweed and got her craned out and trucked home to Beenleigh area. Sat her in the back yard with dreams of doing her up and going sailing. Had been quite successful in making money on some smaller boats and this was the next step.
The rust just took off and between working and raising a family I just could not keep up with the corrosion. A few years later I sold all the components, engine, steering, rig sails etc and pulled the acro's out of one side and let her drop onto the lawn, then I cut her into chunks with a plasma. Got about $200 for all the steel and about $2000 for the lead. Between buying and selling I nearly broke even but spent many weekends trying to restore her then many more just trying to get rid of her.
I still have a few bits of her, got her ships bell and some winches. I have been meaning to dig them out and start a free stuff thread in the sailing forum that has worked well on other forums on SB. Watch this space if you need a couple free (old style) winches.

ps. I was told she was an Alan Buchanan design when I bought her but I think that is incorrect. I believe she was built in Brookvale/Manly area around 1966 and was one of two built at the same time.
