I hate to bring up the Wombat again but........... After a dismal surfing effort from me in 2018 (pretty sure I could count the number of sessions for the whole year on one hand), my New Years resolution is to get back in the water.
My current goto board is a Mark Richards Puffer 5 (5'10 x 34L). It's a fantastic board but I'm not a fantastic paddler. While I have no problems with the MR in small surf, when the surf gets good it's another story. The competition for waves increases, the sweep increases, the paddle back to the line up gets harder and I struggle to get waves.
So, I was looking for a new stick to help me get the stoke back, with the main criteria being to help me get more waves. With me being an ordinary surfer at best, performance was way down the list. I wanted a board that was easy to paddle, easy to pick up waves on and easy to surf.
I was looking at longboards and mid lengths. I fondled a Howard Special Mini in the shop some time back and I've wanted one ever since. So I was drooling on the North Coast Surfboards website, bemoaning the fact I couldn't afford a new Howard Special Mini when I happened across a Bear Fat Arse Wombat on their sale page. I used to own the Surftech version some years back and liked it a lot. But at 6'6 long, would it be enough board to fulfil my criteria?
I mulled it over for several weeks, looking at other options but kept going back to the Wombat. The other boards on the sale page disappeared until there was only the Wombat left, waiting patiently for me.
I couldn't resist any longer and after a quick dash down the coast last week, It's now safely in my garage. Will it be the one? Only time will tell.
