SS34 anyone?

Mighty tempted

Can someone explain that engine installation? Twin screw? Paddlewheeler?

Is the engine mounted at the rear with the drive going forward and then going to a drop box before going rearward again
I think it is called a V drive

Yep, a V-Drive - used in race & ski boats a lot. You can step up or step down the gearing.

Edit: Just beat me r13

I can see an awful lot of disadvantages and not much in favour. The S&S 30 Yankee has a better idea, with the engine mounted in the saloon and the entire drive and engine accessible .

On the Yamaha 33 here the engine and gear box is mounted under the V berth up front and there is a long driveshaft running down to the propeller at the rear

It make is easy to work on the engine and gear box as shown in this one that is for sale www.yachtandboat.com/listing/yamaha-33-yacht

That one has been sold.

For sure a good boat but the design was 1976 during the IOR rule heyday and bow down static trim (no crew on board) was the go for rating reasons. Never mind the instability in a seaway with such a large inertia of the engine and gearbox up there - or the diabolical lack of control downwind hard pressed. I thought these were a Japanese design or Dick Carter but they are by Peter Norlin who was a top designer. I am sure they did not all have the engine and gearbox up there - rather very few.

Can it be believed that the FD was designed in 1951. Where were you in 1951.........
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flying_Dutchman(dinghy)
Yes wish I could snare this but way past my timeline..........recall seeing the Aus titles sailed on the harbour in the early-mid 70s with about 20 boats hitting the line off Taylors Bay heading into Rose Bay on the first work..........Carl Ryves and James Cook coming out on top in that race.........Mark Bethwaite and Tim Alexander, Jamie Wilmot and James Cook, and CarlR and crew being front of mind as our best in the class.
Of course they are still going strong in Europe but only with tall big blokes sailing them..........

1951 I was a young kid in SA. I owned an old Australian built FD years ago. Fibreglass hull with a ply deck. The only problem was the aluminium mast was very heavy. Raced a Finn on Saturdays and day sailed the FD during the week. Delightful boat to sail and always felt like sailing a trailer sailer. Eventually I put an NS14 rig on it and sailed it solo and could fly a spinnaker it was that stable.

I could never understand why these never took off in Australia.

I remember when Brian Truman bought this boat brand new back in the day and actively raced it with St. Georges Basin Sailing Club off Palm Beach. Brian lived on Greville Avenue and is house backed onto Palm Beach.

The Swanson 28 isn't a motorsailer never was. It was a request from a guy who approached Swansons and wanted a small compact, roomy cruising yacht similar design to the 42 and that is what it is. The idea they are slow is laughable? sail them like any full keel yacht and they sail well. No, they won't point as high as a fin keel, but they weren't designed too.
Yachts a buyers guide has a little bit about Swansons - www.boatsales.com.auional

The owner of the one for sale in caringbah has done a truck load of NM in his yet the engine only has 600 hrs on it, hardly indicative of a motorsailer. The existing engine was in it when he purchased it in Queensland years ago.

I sailed down from Botany Bay yesterday.
Max 8 kts wind, ideal for me to practice using the running backstays.
I was please with the speed of the boat.

Did I do it right?
Before I tacked, I pulled on the running stay on the side I was tacking from.

I release the jib or staysail sheet,
Loosen the active runner/ checkstay.
Tack the boat.
Tension the new runner.
Then tighten the jib or staysail sheet.
I want to avoid tightening the jib or staysail sheet before a runner/checkstay is set,

Drove around Batemans Bay today and never saw the Swanson 32. Was not on the mooring where I thought it should be. Has it sold?

Fortunately the Davidson 34 in Jervis bay has now sold. That was an absolute gift!
