Looking for a serious liveaboard? This is a pretty good start. Budget on a short motor or secondhand.

Not going to comment on the price, but I now have a case of engine-access-envy. But, where is the engine mounted in Evening Star? SailBoat Data shows an SS30 with the engine under the saloon table, but that does not seem the case from the photos.

In the advert text (specifications tab) is included "engine access under v berth". The photo of the engine seems like this is the case. Assume there must be an intermediate shaft from the gearbox output to the propeller shaft forward end with universal joints? As with any drive train alignment needs to be maintained..........eg

I see it's no longer on the market, I feel kind of sorry for the highest bidder, some serious money evento get her out of Maritimes hair, befor any positive renovation could begin!

Aside from the obvious challenge with shaft alignment, I wonder how the balance and handling of the boat is affected by moving the engine and all of the weight that far forward?

Hi, we must be looking at different photo's, I see the engine located adjacent to the galley just forward of the companionway steps.

I just rang the broker to clarify. He advised yes the engine is in the v berth - at the rear of the v berth - and there are "2 or maybe 3" shafts which make up the drive train. The propeller exits "just aft of the keel". He advises that the boat sits well and the weight further forward "doesn't impact much on sailing performance". Obviously there would be some impact in the larger seaways. A trial sail would indicate how she goes.

Hi I think I see the problem, I was looking at the swanson discussed here and I guess you are refering to the S&S 30 on the previous page.

The original Yankee S&S 30 is a nice boat. Engine access is great, including the complete drive train.

I really wanted to buy this yacht about 12 years ago but was seen off by someone who got there first. I did not have the readies at the time! The Kalik 33 is slightly faster than a UFO 34 and an SS34 and would be my pick of the 3.
Fibreglass hull with a teak over ply deck and going by the asking price there could be issues with the deck. Worth a look though!

That's serious money for what is basically a Spring 25. British designed yacht by Tony Castro. I think most people have gotten over wing keels and their impracticality.

There are plenty of pictures on the site but you usually can inspect. It's in the marina at Batemans Bay.


Once a boat has been 'written off' does anyone know process to gain registration again? Is it even possible in NSW?

The mast base does not touch the bottom of the hull, so engineering wise brilliant but there is no pathway for the charge of get out through the hull.

It is still floating so I guess the lightning strike did not blow a hole in the hull, something I have heard of happening before. Guess the buyer would have to allow for replacing the standing rigging for a start. Then there is all those lovely electronics....

The Goose got a lot of work from its very experienced owners (who are also very good sailors) before it sailed around Oz a couple of years ago. Damn pity about the lightning strike.

More importantly is the whole mast ring frame.
any corrosion or crevice cracking and the whole thing is toast.

Still got the mast frame pins from woodyard somewhere, got hit by lightning, blew the filler over the bottom of the pins right away and fried the pins as the that was way for the charge to get out of the boat.
