Advertised on Facebook as well with lots of interesting comments. I'm fairly sure it has epoxy filler and then paint over the alloy. After the experience my mate has had with his Cole 42, stripping it back to bare alloy and leaving it bare I should imagine this boat would come out just as good. Great buy for someone not scared of getting dirty hands.

And if you didn't like how it eventuated you could probably sell the engine and winches for more than that

I know the guy who raced it to Osaka. Had cracked ring frames after that and difficult to weld because of the filler on the hull.

Free catamaran, not sure if designed for sailing but judging by the shape I would say so.
Question being, is fibreglass this far gone even salvageable?

Fibreglass will pretty much last forever. The only suspect part would be if there is encapsulated timber and it has been exposed to rainwater. This would require a lot of money to get on the water. The interior could be done fairly cheaply if you did all the labour. The rig would be very expensive if it was all bought new. Shape doesn't look too bad for a cruising cat. If you treated this project as if it was a wooden boat it would work out OK. Still it's a lot of work and you would want to be prepared to work 7 days a week.

In the early 80s I inspected a heavy displacement powerboat round bilge glass hull - no deck or cabin - about 30ft which had been propped up in the backyard for what would have been over 10 years maybe 15, completely exposed to the weather. As above the glass around and over all encapsulated timber was cracked and completely unserviceable, the timber rotted. Not saying this would be the case here but the potential would be high - the photo of the hull external surface is similar to that powerboat, with mould and algae etc a total cover. I am sure that hull would have ended up at the tip.

It looks more like a mould to me. If that's the case, then the interior (the part that matters) could be in ok condition.

Edit: With the deck mould sitting on the hull mould.

There are plenty of people about that just like fooling around with boats. They buy them, fit them out or restore them and sell them on and move on to the next boat.

Here is a very nicely maintained Cole 32. Not 'cheap' but I looked at it last Friday and only passed on it because it was too small for me.

30 grand for a Cole 32 is cheap in today's market. Lovely boat too.

I know exactly what you mean. I fell prey to that addiction but after 7 yachts I have cured myself of it.

It was nice, but I just couldn't stand up in it, so had to pass.

Shallow draft Hood 23 hull. I know this boat, I've towed it about on the river. $50. Has winches, pushpit and pulpit etc. and plenty of fittings.

That is very nice! Even has a half-hull model of the boat on the bulkhead.

"Runaway" is for sale again. This famous Lidgard yacht is one for timber enthusiasts. Unfortunately, it's in Darwin. I wanted to buy this yacht a few years ago but the wife said no. Pictures in the ad are poor but there are plenty online.

Looks good value. Shame about the in-line spreaders and runners.

This one moored just down from me. I know the owner. Beautifully kept, properly built solid yacht with everything sorted. Custom built for the inventor of the Windex.

Good value. These have fibreglass cockpits and cabin with plywood decks so the repairs will be dead simple.
