Hi Bushdog,
I never made contact with the broker on the first boat.
The photos of the seconds boat were taken eighteen months ago and some were taken earlier than that. Other issues involving the SS-39 and the difficult getting it out of Victoria and other considerations influenced my decision.

Still looks like the same bare bones boat. I have heard that prestige boats from before this period have a bit of osmosis. The boat looks solid, but is clearly at the end of a refit cycle.

Out of the prestige S&S 39's that have been for sale, this one seemed to be the most original and it has a lot of appeal.

Very few have osmosis but from what I've been told it can depend on when glass laid. WA in summer has exceptionally low humidity which is good news in prevention of osmosis but winter can be very high. She certainly looks different with the newer pics! Lot of work there and cost. If you have the time and extra funds it could be worthwhile if a low offer was taken and about 40k to 50k put into her but that's some serious cash for me.

Affordable yachts in the sweet spot 30 to 36 feet.

The basic build is the same as my "Apache" but she has, shall we say, the "Fairmont Fit Out".

The timber work is beautiful but it does come at the price of extra displacement as does the electric anchor winch, extra hatches, dorade vents, the alloy dodger coaming, the laid teak in the cockpit and the eutectic fridge system.

At a rough guess I would say she is at least half a tonne more displacement than Apache.

stopped when the jetty is rapidly approaching.

Not just jetties.
Had a sand bar do the same thing the other day.
No problem, even loaded up I stopped rather fast

Another boat in lock down. 3/4 fibreglass cabin version with ply decks. Needs a tidy up but nothing serious. Fix the cockpit and toss the wheel steering at the same time.

Please let me know if this is not the right place to ask this. There's a 1989 23ft San Juan yacht moored out front of my place up for sale - $3,000k. It's only posted on FB otherwise I'd share a URL. It comes with 6 spare sails, mooring and 12 months' rego. However, I went to have a look and there's no motor, no trailer, no dinghy and the fouling is terrible. No hatch, no aft cabin door, bilge is full of water and bilge pump is broken, electrics are shot, seagulls and cockroaches have had a field day. He hasn't been on it in two years and he's left the sail on the boom since then. Mast is old, wires are a bit rusty, hull light is smashed, pulpit is missing a bolt etc. It's a big project but I'm up for it.

The seller is not budging on price. As an amateur I'd like to know what someone should reasonably pay for a boat in this condition. My key concern is that I won't know if there's any serious issues until it's been scraped and cleaned. Photo below to give you an idea.

You are wise to be cautious. Most sellers put a margin on their listing price to allow for "reasonable" negotiations. If I had to estimate the typical sold price to the listed price of numerous small yachts I have sold it would be 85%. Being negotiable is also a sign of good faith and a 2 way street transaction. Imho it could be worth $3K if it cleans up ok and you were able to do most work yourself, and didn't over-capitalise on expensive electrics and comms, or outboard, or trailer. But as you say if cleaning the hull bottom barnacles off removes bits of gelcoat then the refurb would maybe get out of hand. There are plenty of similar yachts on the market now with negotiable sellers and are presented well.
