Wow, a plank-on-edge by Burgess. Historically interesting, to be sure.

Built in 1999 with epoxy and sheathed hull! Needs a rebuild. It's going to take that one special person to buy this.

G'day Ramona,
I've heard the term before but never understood what it means. What pray tell is a sheathed hull? Is it another term for a cored hull, pls excuse my ignorance!

Hi Shaggy
There are a lot of ways to construct a wooden hull, but if it is only coated with paint it is really susceptible to all kinds of damage and deterioration.
Therefore the hull is sheathed in fibreglass.
There are all sorts of exotic sheathing materials and techniques nowadays.
But the older jobs didn't have access to those materials and as Ramona suggested could be hiding a nightmare. Here is a vid of little simple strip planked boat that is sheathed and faired.

The excellent video posted by garymalmgren pretty much covers it. It's the usual outer skin on strip timber hulls and cold molded hulls. It works exceptionally well on these types of construction. Carvel planking it's a different story. Carvel hulls will bend and twist in a seaway and the planks will slide against each other slightly. These hulls need to be painted with a single pot paint that will allow for movement. Two pot paint will crack. Same goes for fibreglass sheaving if fibreglass resin is used. The sheaving will separate from the planks and water will eventually penetrate and rot will start. Some small boats will get away with it but it's usually the kiss of death for a timber hull.
Quality carvel planked yachts like "Tina of Melbourne" are not sheaved usually and these will have the planks splined at the time of construction. This makes them one big piece of wood!

It is not a sampson post. It is a wheel steering pedestal.

Apart from that, what do you think of the boat?

Assume this will go soon. Suggest the 3.8t displacement might not be correct - rather 2.5t as per sailboatdata link - albeit they may not be the same design..................

I do like a nice VDS, but $7500 for the mooring???, surely that's a typo, or is Matilda Bay highly sought after?

Yes I would expect Matilda Bay would be highly sought after but serious buyers would not take any notice of this part of the advert. It is only an option to the yacht price so assume would be for the owner to try and salvage some $s back............ give the guy/girl a break.............

Good find but I think Mah Jong will need a lot of boat dollars spent on her.

A wheel-steering pedestal? But, it has a tiller. Does the pedestal allow you to switch to a wheel? It looks like it has some sockets to allow you to insert a handle to turn something. But what does it turn? If it turns the rudder, there must be some gears below deck to change the angle to the rake of the rudder stock.

(PS Answer to your second question - yes she looks nice, and well kept, but I'm not in the market atm, just browsing from home)

I looked at a Tayana 42. Worried about having to maintain all that teak!

I thought the 42 was a good size.

I guess the 1.74 draft would be an issue for some.
