I think I do know what do you need to win Americas Cup
All you need is wet old piece of rag !!
Look at this: 1.38:21
How much water could you drain ? We are not talking about extra 5kg lead as balance.

All you need is old rag or forgotten T-shirt to block the water drain holes when you need and the spray will fill your hulls.
Now all you need is allow this water to flow from one hull to another at every turn (a little bit of pumping may help too)

During the race this drain remains miraculously dry

So what are the tricks to getting it to work live. If I click on that youtube link now I'm one of one of 45 AC fans watching a clock on a black screen clicking down from 15 hours 9 min 12 seconds. When 50,000 are watching i can't get through. Do I watch that clock all night to preserve my place in the queue or what?

Not sure exactly which link you are using, but this is what I'm doing to watch it.

1. Go to YouTube website, search on "Americas Cup", and then in any of the video listings click on "America's Cup" to go to the official page.
2. Scroll down about one page or so, and click on 'AMERICA'S CUP LIVE'.

Has worked every time for me no matter what time...mid-race, at the end, etc.

Well done Jimmy, Russ & all the crew you did an amazing job. Thanks Team NZ for being part of such an amazing bit of racing. Insane. Loved almost every minute of it.

Geez you just want to give Dean Barker, the crew and the rest of New Zealand a hug. The 26th of September will now on be 'hug a kiwi' day. Oh you can feel a nation's pain.

Not wanting to rub it in but now you guys know how we feel each time the Wallabies play for the Bledisloe cup.

I think today would be the only day that a Kiwi would contemplate swapping the Bledisloe Cup for another sort of cup.

I did say contemplate, & even then it would only be for a few seconds - they are very, very serious about their rugby

Commiserations to Dean Barker and the Kiwis. You raced well but lets face it Oracle just had way too much upwind speed. I am certainly going to hug every Kiwi I see today and provide some comfort. I can't stand Larry Ellison and his bleating and really wanted the Kiwis to take him out but not to be.

The richest man in the world wins again!!!!!!! Great racing though....I thoroughly enjoyed watching the series.

Cheers guys - Yeah many gutted looking people around work today, however, most seem to accept that it was rich man vs rich man, rather than nation vs nation.

I gotta say, I am surprised at the level of support for the kiwi boat on this forum, I was thinking that with Spithill as the skipper you lot would be Oracle all the way!

Anyhoo, I hope that Dirty Larry is happy with his shiny little trophy....it only cost him about a billion hahahahahha

PS whats the story with the automatic control on the foils???? I'd like to know how that got allowed (I mean it must run on stored power right? Its electronic!!!!)

Yeah, it's kinda weird. Did 'USA' really win the cup???

I never know who to cheer for now everything is internationally corporatised. Same with 'local' football teams. I remember when I was a kid and used to barrack for St George rugby league team in Sydney. One of the team players was my primary school teacher, another was a local copper, a couple of others were mates of my older brother from school, and they used to train across the road. Walking to the ground to watch the game on Sunday's, I remember walking behind team members along the footpath, as they were also walking to the ground from their home because they were locals.

Now the team has nothing to do with the area really, except their (sometimes) home ground, and players move with the money. One day your cheering for a player, the next season that same player is playing for the opposition.

^^ Very interesting article on the optimisation of hull shapes for the AC72's by one of the Oracle designers. His prediction basically came true, the Oracle hulls were almost purely optimised for windward displacement sailing, what one them the cup; of course they obviously foiled upwind in the last few races at certain times once it became clear in certain situations that mode was favorable.

There is no automatic control of the foils. There is no storage of energy permitted via either electrical (with a few exceptions, blige pumps, electronics etc) or hydraulic means. All energy required must be provided by the crew on demand. The mail foils are trimmed forward and aft to maintain hull attitude. The switching of the valves in the systems may be done electronically (by human interface IE not computer controlled) but all power required to move them is provided on demand by the crew. It is the inherent stability of the foil designs' which makes them sailable.

Edit: I may stand corrected, appologies Chris...apparently OTUSA was running a fly by wire foil control system?...which seems to be not within the rules....although if it's just switching maybe it is legal as long as you keep pumping the hydraulics up to it on demand. Surely against the spirit of competition though? Can't really find too much info on it for obvious reasons.

While watching the news the Mrs just asked me how they got the lines marked on the water? My comment there are 2 small guys in each boat (one on each hull) painting them....."But they could go faster if they didn't have to do that wouldn't they"?

Makes sense to do so, because it's really the only time that you'd expect the hulls to be in the water.

Great article on Australia II

IT was the race that woke the nation. And then gave it a day off work.

Thirty years ago today Australia II, backed by Alan Bond's millions - just short of $20m, to be more precise - and skippered by John Bertrand, sailed into sporting folklore off the waters of Newport, Rhode Island.

In the early hours of an Australian morning, Bertrand led his crew on the Ben Lexcen-designed yacht back from 3-1 down to break the longest winning streak in sporting history - one that dated back 132 years, to before the American Civil War.

Prime minister Bob Hawke then cover-drove sporting excellence magnificently over the top into sporting legend, clad in that iconic "Australia" jacket and almost too excited to sit in his chair at the Royal Perth Yacht Club. He framed the moment by declaring: "Any boss who sacks anyone for not turning up today is a bum."

- See more at: www.theaustralian.com.au/nocookies?a=A.flavipes

"We created the boxing kangaroo flag," Bertrand says...

Really? Apparently it was sold to the Australian Olympic Committee in the late 1980s.

I thought it was kinda always round. TIL.

You could say there was only a coat of paint in the whole competition. Do your trick on this one Panda, paint it allblack just leaving the Kiwi logo. Sponsors, if only they'd pay money without ruining the colour scheme.

Was listening to a pom on the radio today. He pointed out team USA changed to a pommy tactician then started winning. Therefore England really won it.

There was a point when Jimmy Spithill was way behind and I remember he was asked something about the overall outcome and he said something like "how good would it be to win from here, what an opportunity". I've looked through my Youtube history and can't find it - anyone know what race it was? I thought then it was an awesome display of leadership, now I see it as something truly amazing.

Found it

45.20

After race 7

"I think the question is ... imagine if these guys lost from here. What an upset that would be. Um, I'm mean they've almost got it in the bag. So.... that's my motivation. Um, you know that'd be one hell of a story. Um, that'd be one hell of a comeback. And that's the kind if thing that I'd like to be a part of. I've been involved in some big fight backs you know, some big challenges and facing a lot of adversity and that'd be the kind of thing I'd love to be involved in"

Wow!

Plus they changed the rake of the rig and started to tack from hull to hull instead of dragging 2 hulls around in each tack.
