Ahh crusier as I said. Nothing I ever tried in bed made the difference to my experience that my two east euro girls did. After a few nights with the east euros, go back to a westerner and you will wonder how you ever slept with it.

I'm half stepping up to an X6. After reading some posts here I'll be keeping the Chinook alloy as a backup.

That said the Alloy Chinook Slalom I have is damn heavy, main reason I'm replacing. I've bent the tail piece in the surf, but found a replacement for $50.

Hi All,
Managed to break my Chinook Ali boom over the weekend . Since the head and tail piece can be bought separately I assumed the arms can also be bought individually. Has anyone managed to track them down? Just seems pointless not to sell the bit that breaks / bends the most .

^ Ok, can we safely say there is a massive difference between the X3 gear and the X9 gear?

I've got the 170 and I'm going to get a 140 as well for wavesailing and my smaller race sails.

Stiffest boom I've come across. I've had some ballistic high speed crashes and the thing didn't even flinch. Love it

Ps: I'm a heavyweight (100kg+) and I've destroyed three booms in the past two seasons.

Well not every day.

Have you seen the new Neil Pryde booms with the curve in the arm. Apparently very stiff.

I'm 96kg and broke numerous second hand booms both for small wave sailing and large sail flat water. Brought a brand new X3, broke an replaced under warranty twice each time within 2 months, then paid difference to upgrade to X6, broke and replaced twice.

Finally got fed up and ripped into my credit card and upgraded to X9 on both booms. So far 3 months of some pretty extreme days and all good.

Conclusion X3 and X6 are a waste of cash for any heavyweights, even finally got a shop guy to admit there is a known issue with the NP alloy booms around the mast end. Purchasing an X9 has allowed me to be more agressive with my sailing which in turn has improved my sailing and jumping.

reporting back on the boomtopic - 3 months since I destroyed the last one.

Bought a North Alu boom 140-190 and we've had pretty non stop 4.2 and 4.7 weather all winter and it feels good, hasn't broken but I'm only hanging 84kgs off it now instead of 94+kg's hopefully this will make a difference.

One thing is the measurements on the boom have to be out cause I have to extend it 2.5 to 5cm (by the boom graduation measurements) more than the previous boom - and beyond sail recommended to get adequate out haul - is it me or are the graduated markings just not that accurate.

Are you using a skinny mast with an adapt or shim/bush if so that could affect the settings on your boom as I thunk the measurements are taken from the front from the mast clamp

aeron booms are good, but sadly nothng lasts for ever

Got a solid 2 years out of mine before it exploded on the weekend, probably 100 -150 seshs, a lot of floggins and a gazillion jumps, all for a 1/3 the price of carby..

i'd defo go aeron again or any other alloy one piece.

had north silver at start of year, grip kept peeling away after 2 weeks, but stong boom, then finally changed to try aeron after gotten fed up NS boom trying to glue grip back on and requested warranty on it. After using aeron for 1 months - (10 good sessions) boom to mast clamp exploded mid jump where boom attaches itselth to clamp . got boom replaced and recieved newer beefier version of boom clamp and hasn't been an issue now for 3 months ;). highly rate aeron booms compared to many i've tried over years...... feels stiffer than the NS silver in jumps and on waves, also has markings for harness lines making life a little easier when using adjusting to different size sails, grip feels better in the hands than NS silver did (both reduced dia. btw).

I'm not looking to cause a mass debate on this, but I don't understand why people keep making reference to "I broke a boom and it never saw a wave...". I have broken many booms and I'd have to say that the vast majority of them, over the last 17 years have broken because of:

Over extension
Over use
Catapults (main issue - especially when hitting sandbars etc - I did 3 in a year at Narabeen lake)
General fatigue

The only wave related problem I've had is a snapped outhaul and the end pulley system once got ripped off as the rivets failed.

Anyway, carry on.

For once Vando is right, alloy will last 12-18months at best, if it last longer trade it! Best to get X9, should get 5 years plus with no worries!

Thats Vando's car by the looks of it, bet the battery has gone flat by now...

any carbon boom brand will give that same feeling.

Except for one with an average head. I bought a no name brand carbon and found that the head didn't make a very sure connection. Put a Maui Sails head on it and made a nice difference, felt tighter, stiffer and more responsive.

Yeah - Powerex skinny witha shim -the boom didn't come with one - maybe I could get away with out the shim - just seems to attache nicer with it - I should look on the North website and see if I can use it without it -
