Hey all have we seen the last good 25+ Noreasters for this season??
The wind pattern seems to be changing now for the east to south wind pattern, or does the noreasters still blow thru autumn.

Does anyone know the wind pattern from now until winter. let us know that would be great.

It seemed that this season was a short wind season from November last year the wind has been some what easy on us.

Hey Walt, I had a great session today. Seems to have been a pattern the last couple of weeks, where the NE'er doesn't deliver until 5:30, then hangs in until 7:00 before steadily dropping off. Both today, and last Sunday a stack of guys went home just before the NE'er came in - leaving about 3 or 4 of us to enjoy 18-20 knts on our own.

The rip-roaring NE'er will be few and far between from now on, but look out for the Southerlies, which can come at any time, but can give you a steady 20+ for several hours.

Then there are the Westerlies which will come in a few months, can be 20-30 knts, but can sometimes peak for only an hour or two. Need to sail these at Foreshore Road, where you get some great smooth speed runs, although not as long as Kyeemagh.

There will also be the steady supply of 10-12 knot SE, which are not that exciting, but are usually sailed out of desperation if you have not made it out recently.

Look out for me in the Southerly this Sunday, it's gonna be great. (Fingers crossed!!!)

Regards,
Harrow.

Its been a very poor year for NE On the Gold Coast i have been here 6 yrs and its the worst windless summer, however last winter gave some really good SW TO SE and the odd NW If you know were to go you can usually get on the water you just need to travel a little further. We generall say April will be the last possible NE Seabreeze month.

It's been a pretty good season for me this year. I took a year and a half off due to an ankle injury, but I've sailed every weekend this year.

www.seabreeze.com.au/gallery/gallery.asp?imageid=3083

The noreasters are getting a little lighter, but 13-18 knots is enough to get going most of the day with a good 7m sail.

The bureau reckons it'll be NE @ 15-20 this afternoon. So there's some life in this summer yet. If it comes in early enough, I'll be out there. Gotta go out at 6pm tonight.

Harrow, I'll definitely be out Sunday. I'll be launching from the Acropolis...

Is this a shop or something? What's it near? In Southerlies, I generally go from the Southern end of the Kyeemagh sailing strip.

It's that huge house across the road from the beach that's right opposite the ramp where we launch in southerlies. It's the next one down fron the NE access ramp. The house is huge and is a real landmark when you're out at the runway looking for your launching spot. No doubt you'll see it tomorrow.

I guess it's more the Parthenon than the Acropolis. Dead ringer...

Noticed that Kurnell has been picking up a few more knots than Mascot lately. In these wishy-washy easterlies the last couple of weeks, a slog out in the direction of Kurnell has produced a few good runs. Only trouble is that it is 4 km back to the beach, so been praying for no gear failure!!

yeh had a run this afternoon, was struggling abit with a 5.8 did not use the tabou use the old board but at least gave it a splash.
It just goes to show with the wind lately it does pay to have a selection of different size sails to capitalise on the wind. So spending the cash is hard work but to have the size that is needed to sail is worth being on the water planning at 12 knots.
So lets see what happens tomorrow.

Same for up here at Port Macquarie on the MNC. Was a nice NE yesterday at my favourite MNC break (Middle Rock), but there was some National Kite comp there!!!! Were some nice little waves coming through too, was fuming seeing 40 kites out bumfluffing around doing the same tricks 257 different ways......had to sail on the north side of the rock instead.......At first took out the 5.8 with 116L free ride board and it was iffy, planning sometimes. At about 5 it kicked in enough for a 5.8 on the 85L wave board........but that's as good as a NE will get for us here for the rest of summer. Looking forward to the SE starting for some starboard tack waveriding.

I didn't make it out either - but looking at the graphs it was probably better in the morn.
Shame for the guys who didn't bother going out yesty cause they were holding back for the sceaming southerly.
My motto is:- if you bother driving out ya really no excuse for not getting wet even if its only for 5 minutes.....yeah I know sometimes you just can't

It was niiiice down south at Sanctuary Pt today; 20+ sailors from Dobroyd and Wollongong club fleets out on longboards and slalom boards, and 20+ guys doing the NSW slalom series a couple of hundred metres away .

The slalom guys seemed to be using 7.5s or slightly less; I paced them with a 7.4 but didn't have the time to enter.

I have to say, after spending most of my time at Dobroyd in recent years, it's wonderful to get down the coast

I was out from 10 till 3. It was definitely better earlier, but I was overpowered in the gusts on my flat 5. Each hour after that I made my sail fuller and put on a larger fin. There were some huge lulls, but you could plane on every run.

It was a pretty good day all round. Not as good as I was expecting, but I still got 5 hours on the water. (I cant move today)

Well I ventured to Kurnell the wind was the same as Kyeemagh but the difference was the chop and you are sailing over shallower water so you see most of the bottom as you are trying to hang on.
I'm not confident in the Southerlies but the only way to overcome that is to try so I did at Kurnell had one run only was overpowered and in the water alot with my 2cam 5.8 the only sail I own ( fustrating ), must invest in smaller sail. but the chop was alot smaller which helped alot.

Hey Harrow it might be worth the extra 20min drive to Kurnell to try the difference and there is good open grass to rig.
So if your able to try it and others come along as well them I can get some ideas on how to sail in those conditions and with more of us sailing together you fell involved and have some conversation will rigging and resting, also makes the day a pleasent outing.

Hey Walt, whats Kurnell like these days??
Havent sailed over there in years but we used to sail it in the old NSW speed sailing days in southerlies.
It was unreal, dead flat water and constant wind. The place was just dirt and sand, no grass. ive heard its now all green with lots of trees. Does this disturb the wind??
Nothing on the northern beaches yesterday.

Dave, we used to rig up at Bonna Pt and sail out into Quibray bay and then do the run along the shore towards the groynes at Silver Beach.
Really flat water in close in a southerly.
Sam P said it was a bit gusty now as the council has planted vegetation and trees around the area.
Next time a good southerly is due Ill take the extra long drive and have a look.

The guys at Wind Surf n Snow said in a southerly it's good to launch at the Southern Tip of Dolls Point, more like Sandrinham and head upwind as much as possible till you're even further south than the bridge, around Pelican Point area. Apparently due to the bottleneck lay of the land the wind is a lot stronger there and also much flatter water. I'm going to give that a go but if it doesn't work I'll head to kurnell for sure. Not sure if it's only 20 mins further though....Then again, I come from the Hills District anyway so what's another half hour further travelling time going to make
BTW, where is Bonna Point at Kurnell?

[blue]Hey DavMen,

If your familiar with the south side you travel over the captain cook bridge past McDonalds which is on Taren Point Road then on the next light at Captain Cook Drive you take left and travel that to the end then travel paralell with the bay on Prince Charle Parade to the end at Bonna point thru the gates and launch on the left across the grass area good spot to rig.

If any other guys interested to give kurnell a try lets get numbers and check it out this weekend if southerly blowing.

Also if interested check out Google Earth and search Sydney/Botany Bay for a outer space view pretty cool.

hey Ka43,
If you haven't been there for years its not all dirt anymore there's grass areas and trees to pretect the picnic areas not bad now.

Hi Walt

Yeah thats were I thought, just next to the last groyne. It's just that the few times I've ventured over there I've never seen anyone rigging or sailing, so I wasn't sure on the precise spot. We might be ineed of a new venue once the DeSal pipework starts at Kyeemagh and eff's up the spot.

The Kyeemagh/Brighton marina again/still.

Should look like the Gold coast if they get their way

From SMH today...
www.smh.com.au/national/secret-report-lists-environmental-obstacles-to-councils-plans-20070227-gdpk1v.html

..."ROCKDALE City Council plans to forge ahead with an $80 million marina at Brighton-le-Sands despite environmental obstacles and questions about its viability.

A secret report commissioned by council says that the proposal involves large-scale dredging of Botany Bay, where wind and waves would require a breakwater so big it would block views across the water.

The report lists five public recreation groups whose boating events would be affected, and says that Lady Robinsons Beach would, in sections, erode into the bay.

The 300-berth marina and pier, which could include a 50-metre-high neon-lit "crystal" and an underwater restaurant, is still rated by the council as its No. 1 priority...."
