When a whitey is hungry, its hungry.

Its got nothing to do with taste.

Take the 2000 attack at North Cott...

After Ken was attacked, the whitey wasnt finished and chased another guy up onto the reef. It was so keen for him, it got itself up onto the reef. A colleague witnessed it all and couldnt believe his eyes seeing this big whitey half out of the water.

Now take this...

Whitey's have been regularly observed off Cape Town, taking a bite out of a seal, letting it die then coming back to finish off. This way the shark avoids a fight and/or conserves energy.

There is a theory this is what happens with humans... but in our case, the human is usually pulled from the water before the shark returns.

An example of this being Geoff Brazier at the Abrolhos islands in 2005. The whitey (a big one at 6m) took his bottom half first, then returned for the top half shortly after. Geoff was not pulled from the water soon enough in this instance.

Actually the Ken Crew incident went noting like that. The Shark hit Ken as he was coming out of the water. The shark continued to pursue him right into the shallows and the shark was turned side ways and was slightly beached. One of Kens mate ran down and kneed it to the stomach area and proceed to puch it until it finally let go and turned and made it of the shore.

The Police boat then had launched the small inflatable and the shark followed it around eye bailing the police crew. A mate on this boat asked for permission to shot it but was told to hold of until they got instruction. They aventually did get permision to shoot it but the shark had dived and was not seen again after that.

Also the shark once it let go of Ken, whilst swimming back out swam past other swimmers and early paddlers showing no interest in attacking anyone else..

How do i know this i was there on the beach with Hugh Edwards a resident shark expert at the time..

Yep November from memory. Early morning though Like about 6.45 ish

There were hundreds of people in the water and to see them all get out and stand on the beach. The worst was standing around after it happened and you could see the shark for a long period after. It patrolled up and down looking pissed until the police ducky turned up and it then seemed rather interested in the officers on board. Matt said it was checking him and his partner out rather vigilantly.

interesting, however your version of events is actually "similar" in nature to what was reported to me by a witness. The details/accuracy of my info seem to have faded somewhat over the years, or may have been reported incorrectly at the time...apologies for this.

never the less, after removing Kens leg, it seems taste wasnt an issue, and only after a fight the shark backed down.

IMO your version may still align with the point I was originally trying to make - whitey's dont like conflict and if a whitey wants you, he aint worried how you taste.

Reported as occuring 6 November 2000.

Basically, the best way to understand most shark attacks is to think of the shark as a baby or a puppy dog.

Great Whites, the puppy dogs of the sea? It might have been more tactful to wait until well after Bryn Martin's casket-less memorial service to air this dubious opinion.

Sorry to hear about the recent attacks in WA.

Ive been reading this topic with great interest and it reeminds me of the conversations going on in the SA surfing community in late 2000 when we had two fatal attacks a day apart at Elliston and Cactus.

I found interesting the points in this thread in regards to it being rare that White Sharks will eat people. In both these attacks at Elliston and Cactus the victims were fully eaten and i can think of at least another 6 instances straight off the top of my head in SA where the victims were fully eaten.

With the attacks here there is generally some type of body part left, you guys get more sharks and way more attacks then we do. Looking at it that way SA has more history I guess with GWSs.
This is the first attack I can think of where there was no trace of the victim

I seam to recall they never found the remains of Brian Guest, who was killed just south of Perth in 2009. I could be wrong, as I'm going entirely off memory.

But for me, that is really the only other WA shark attack where someone was actually consumed that I can remember off the top of my head.

Dont have time to look up the statistics, so what I'm saying in this post is purely based off hazy memory and could be wrong.

I guess if the victim isnt pulled out of the water straight away there is a massive chance of not recovering the body or parts. Its not just the shark its the other animals and ocean currents as well that could help with this.

Geoff Brazier was finished off completely, as witnessed - no remains were found.

Same goes for Brian Guest, no remains.

In the other WA cases, the bodies were removed just after the attack. If they hadnt been removed, I bet they would have been finished off as well.

RIP

Whitey's do not have a problem with eating us. Perhaps we're not top of the menu but food all the same.

At the end of the day if sharky is hungry we havnt got a chance.

I remember surfing a spot one day with a mate and we were the only two there, waves were very inconsistant. My mate was surfing the left and I was on the right and we were sitting 25-50m apart, the sets were 10-15min apart and I can remember sitting there in flat murky water thinking any minute now, just waiting for it to happen.
When we both came in we both said the same thing, "glad thats over" almost at the same time.
Great waves, but a few more crew in the water would have been nice

Will they be able to call this a definate fatal shark attack without finding his body or any sort of physical evidence? Have there been many other shark attacks where the victim was taken without out any physical evidence proving it was indeed a shark attack?

p.s. just imagine if they didn't find his bathers, this whole situation would be turned on it's head..

Actually the victim at the Abrolhos there was a lot of evidence in the water. Mostly a yellow fatty slick actually.

Brian Guest at Rockingham was actually very close to the shore also. From memory his son saw the hole thing but ran for help and we he returned nothing..

The shark with Ken overshot the mark and basically ended up stranded. Once it let go it was more about getting back into the water..

Wow this is freaking amazing! I have just returned from Darwin and we were swiming in crock waters that are controlled and and managed so well. Our sharks are out of controll. I can't say that this poor chap would look like a seal and the way older people swim he would not look like a destressed animal. My opinion stands, KULL...... KULL........ KULL......
