Hey GPA,

You said you cracked the rail in another thread, i know you said it is epoxy, is it the X2 full sandwich or is it one of the other epoxy glassed ones, if so is it the slx or slxc or the PE version.

Someone maybe able to tell us the difference in strength etc, if only there was an expert......

Did you look at the fibre flex? I like the sound of these.

The different construction methods are below.

www.surfindustries.com/technology/surfboard-technology.php?src=01

G'day SP - it's the new X2 version. I did look at the FF, but to be honest I was not happy with the look of it... just a dull pro-finish and the carbon rails just looked unfinished (to me). And I was concerned about dinging... Plus it was a few $$ more... $965 from memory...

After surfing my old Poly 7S today I am not sure that I will be keeping the Epoxy... I'll give it a couple more goes, but I made a lot more moves today on the Poly in one surf than I have made in the last few surfs on the Epoxy - I'm hoping it's just a familiarity/adjustment thing... despite a very similar template, the fin set up is different and they are completely different to surf...

@ kadilak : I ended up putting the stock M7/M5's back in and it is MUCH better, but I'm still not in love with it.

Whilst the paddle in is fantastic, to me the board is sitting too high in the water, and does not feel 'locked' into the wave... it still feels very skittish and almost feels like it's turning from the mid section rather than the tail... I describe it a bit like a wet bar of soap skating across a tiled floor - it kind of wants to do it's own thing.

I'll give it another couple of goes once I get it back from repairs.

I can believe you would feel like you are surfing above the wave rather than locked in. I am still on baby waves mostly going straight line, but even I can tell, when you get any speed up it sits up on top of the water pretty quick, which is fine for a kook like me I guess.

Thanks, yeah I've heard that the epoxies feel a bit different as you said a lot more buoyant and tend to sit on top rather than in the water.

The last time I saw Mick out at snapper it was big and he was on a 8 foot carver and ripped the bags out of it and he is a real charger, but that was a few years ago.I've often wondered where he has been.

Oh he likes red boards, always on one.

Geez thanx Mac, I'm all embarrassed now

I think I am figuring this stuff all out now. Test these thoughts:

(1) Can a fat, old noob pick up a big epoxy fish and learn the basics of surfing and have a ball -> yes

(2) Can an experienced poly surfer grab an epoxy board and expect it to pull out all the old tricks and behave exactly like a poly -> no

(3) Is some smart ass kid going to come along someday soon and show off some new signature moves on a board that works completely different to the old poly boards-> in time it is inevitable Then there will be another forum on the breeze and many people will be trying to mimic and improve.

Only the people trying point (2) are going to not be stoked

Well I've only surfed it once since I last posted - and it was small (chest to occasional shoulder), but very clean and nice shape, got a few good moves in - so it was by far my best surf on the new Epoxy - but the conditions were a little timid to be really sure.

I need some fast head high waves to push it a bit... that's when things seem to come unstuck...

Stay tuned.
