Guys,

The event its coming and its going to be BIG!!!

At this point we are waiting for confirmation from the main possible sponsors to start getting all merchandising/advertising material ready so we can go "live".

Based on the great number of people wanting to participate we have decided to make things a little more manageable in order to prevent any unwanted event that could ruin the spirit of the challenge.
Because it's expected to get a great deal of media involved and the sponsors we are trying to engage are big players we have to do things right. There is no room for mistakes.

This is going to be a 3-4 hrs challenge (NON STOP), the participants need to be fit to kite for that length of time.

Consequently, we have decided to limit the number of participants to 25 rider. That way, the rescue team will be able to keep everyone on track.

Yes, would be great to have hundred of people in it and it will definitely happen from the next one in 2014 if this one goes the way its planned.

So, those who feel that are physically (able to kite for at least 2 hrs non stop, had dealt with big swell in the past) and mentally capable to participate please send me an email to [email protected] so we can create a group mail for further info including possibly training days (e.g. shorter downwinders).

Summarising:
Date: Australia weekend (one of the 3 days depending on wind conditions)
Cost: for all riders, the idea is to contribute to cover our expenses including transport (hire of a mini bus + trailer or a big bus 45 seatter ), petrol for all water vehicles participating as part of the rescue team. The T-shirt of the event (we are trying to make something that is suitable for the water).

The sponsor's money will go towards paying for all advertisement material as well as the END POINT BBQ-Party in PM.
All the rest of the money will be donated.

So, please shoot me an email to make you interest in participating official and we can get the ball rolling.

Guys,

Because I have had this question many times lately I wanted to clarify things in relation to the safety of the event.

As you may be aware by the previous comments. We have decided to limit the number of riders to only 25. The reason of this is to ensure 100% safety and success.

Logistically we are planning to have one vessel per 5 riders thanks to the support of other members. A full rescue plan is being put into place in order to make sure we all finish the challenge safe and happy. So, next time we do the Across the Bay we can increase the number of riders and perhaps include other water sports....

This is not a race, this is a group challenge that aims to promote our sport and raise awareness and money towards Cancer. Riders will be closely monitored at all time.

We want to celebrate life and the beautiful country we live in (Australia Day). We are going to be the main show of the day and everyone along the bay will be able to see us. Please do not screw it!! alright?

Would love to but my wife is due on the 30th and having her go into labour while I'm riding across the bay wouldn't go down well.

yep it was temporarily (from the voting) in the Olympics until about a week ago when the committee changed their mind based on Spain's "misunderstanding" during the voting. Now kite is not and windsurfing is back....

Where are you going to launch at Sorrento?

Any S or SW wind is going to be offshore at Sorrento so will not getting off the beach be a little difficult? You would have to drift out and water start from a few 100 metres out.

You could go in at Queenscliff and get clear air but then you have to ride across the shipping lanes and that would not be a good idea.

What course are you going to take?

Going straight up the middle would be a bit scary and not so good for spectators. Going across the bottom of the bay to Dromana then around the coast would be fun and interesting and good for spectators.

Good ? Gorgo,
Not many launch spots along Sorrento.Main spot would be just below the Conti.(Fickle wind) .That time of year theres boats on moorings everywhere, and a million people on the peninsula.Best launch spot would be the old military barracks inside point nepean at the old cattle jetty(Portsea).Nobody on the beach.plenty of space to set up.The wind has less interference.Could launch on anything from s to n/w,and head straight up the Symonds channel to Melbourne. You would have to get the green light from the rangers, thats the only problem.

Yep, the plan is to launch at Sorrento and ride along the bay, ideally no further than a couple of kms from the shore. The intention is to ride in a big group so the mass will attract the spectators who normally on those days will be along the bay.
Yes its a longer circuit, around 70k all together for what I can extrapolate looking at the maps. But being a downwind will not be that hard for the body.

I am organising some training sessions so we can practice riding in groups and solve any possible problems long before the event.

I think your biggest issue with a ride that long is going to be wind variances between sorrento and port melbourne. I.e. wind getting much stronger or weaker along route. My suggestion would be to add a couple of light wind boards in the boats so if anyone starts getting under powerered they have something to keep them going.

What kind of gear is everyone thinking of using? And what is the preferred wind range?

Ill be on a 5'8 underground Kipuna surfboard (straps on) and a 12 or 9mt switchblade. Anything above 18knots S-SW depends on the time of the day.

I'm thinking on doing PM-Seaford at around midday. Yep, tricky on a northerly but the crossing will be tricy also.

I've been training everyday weekdays after 630 at PM or Brighton doing upwinds to build up endurance. The energy needded for the upwind I would say is 3 times more.

I try to do PM -Elwood or Brighton-Hampton every afternoon. 45-1hr solid kite every day.

A good protein shake afterwords + stretching session. One day off a week normally for just recovery and stretching.

It's been now 2 weeks of training.

Last night had a good light wind session w Bernie at Brighton 6-7pm

Guys for those who were at Mambo and haven't confirmed their attendance to the S-PM downwinder please do it now!. I have only 4 vacancies left.

Remember it has to be done via email to [email protected]

Please DO NOT confirm via PM. I need everyone's email address to create a group email and start sending info re: training for those who want to participate.

Cheers

I plan to use my Sector 60 board and my Lithium 12 kite (wind up to 25 knots). This will give me the best wind range (down to 10 knots). If its 25+ knots I might take my 10m kite.

Launching will definitely be tricky - need to scope this out carefully.

Sorry, I was out of town last weekend (hoping to kitesurf at Collaroy but didn't have time in the end).

Yes, three of use crossed from Hampton to Altona and returned last year. Its a long tour and you end up a long way offshore for a lot of the distance. You definitely want a good consistent wind forecast and should also take safety gear such as a PFD/Impact vest, EPIRB and/or waterproof phone.

Yesterday was really nice. What did you do for 6 hours?

A few thoughts:

I notice Cesar earlier mentioned 3-4 hours on the water. Sorrento to Port Melbourne is 60km straight line or 80 km going (Sorrento-Rye-Dromana-Mornington-Frankston-Aspendale-Mentone-St Kilda-Port Melbourne)

Board speed is usually 20-25 kph going upwind or 30-40 going downwind (and can get as high as 50kph). It is much easier to go very fast across the chop. Slamming along dead downwind will knock your body around and possibly break your board.

In a fast downwinder your back leg is going to get sore in about 5 minutes and be agony after 10-15 minutes. You need to change tacks (and feet) fairly frequently. Frequent crashing will also wear you out.

Given that it is a publicised charity event you are going to have to wear life jackets.

I was at Danger point in Torquay. Mad fun. Awesome flat water spot and a sick wave break at the point. Couldn't be beaten. Best conditions i have ever seen in my 3+ years kiting.

In a fast downwinder your legs get sore..mmm dunno about that. I came second in a downwinder from sandringham last year and while i agree you do feel it after 20 minutes, you quickly break through that stiff feeling and its easy after that. I don't train or anything but i kite often.
