Has anyone thought about organizing a rally to support a cull? I know alot of people in the Marine industry who jobs rely on being in the water would be in support. Surely enough is enough or is it just me?

Unfortunately most of those people have jobs to go to and kids to care for. Also then the media will just paint us as a bunch of ocean hating nature killers.

They got it wrong. It needs some big sticker eyes on the ankle strap, be dipped in chilli wax and have a shark banz stuck in there as well.

It could also use a matching letterbox hat for good measure.

If there are any validated shark repellants one would think it would be no big deal for the operators of the MR surf comp to keep a few on hand in the event that a noah turns up.
Sharkbanz, Shark Shield, whatever. Do these things work?

This is so funny, you have those money trap also in Oz!! I'm from Canada and we did a trip to the OBX, a 17hrs drive for a windsurfing trip. There is a tons of Deer on the road and a friends of us bought a set and he volunteer to be the front Car. Man I think I never saw soooo many deer on the road, side of the road than on that drip...hope it works better with sharks.

Interviews with victims scientists activists pollies for a broad perspective. Good read and pretty balanced.

Some highlights for me -

Historically there used to be ALOT more sharks in our waters. Eg Local SW aboriginals are the only salt water aboriginals to have never learnt to swim or use water craft and according to elders thats down to large sharks being prevalent close to shore year round. There are literally hundreds of rock etchings on the east coast of people depicted in the jaws and stomachs of sharks.

Marine biologists are not INDEPENDENT experts just experts as more than a few freely admit they are biased toward marine creatures over human deaths and are ok with that. It's for others to worry about the human impact.

Plenty of the oft repeated stats used to downplay the risk by the likes of sea shepherd are knowingly false. E.g. the more likely to by killed by a coconut line is from an insurance add!

Our own WA shark expert that headed up our research review at UWA is co leading a campaign to remove the words "shark attack" from our language as it confers a sense of purpose on the shark we cannot know. Yeah really.

They also want sharks drawn with less sharp angles for the kiddies.

The "its all down to Jaws" myth that many scientists roll out whenever there s an attack is debunked.

Shark attacks are statistically increasing at a much greater rate than population growth and water based participation would suggest.

Unlike in years gone by we are spared the gruesome details of attacks due to concerns for past and present victims mental health. The descriptions of early attacks are truly horrific.

Shark nets and drums undoubtedly DO work but even the scientists are happy to state repeatedly they do not despite evidence to the contrary. Not very scientific eh.

Not all deaths are equal. There is such a thing as a good death and a bad death. Ie dieing in your sleep at 80 vs eaten alive at 17. So comparing death stats is pretty disingenuous at best.

Ocean guardian the makers of the shark shield already have their insurance and legal plan mapped out for when their first user or their family sues after an attack. Hint it's along the lines of we never said it was 100% effective. Haha.

Anyway recommend if you want to sort through the myths and be informed rather than just regurgitate the propaganda of what is now sadly just a political hot potato.

Yes, but think about the street cred that comes with getting eaten. That's fully sick.

yeah hahah but maybe read the interview with laeticias brouwers mom in the book and think again. farking nightmareish stuff...

and then to be told it was a mistaken identity bite by some scientist when the dad still has PTSD from repeatedly fighting the shark for his daughters body.

I just finished reading it .
A very interesting book & I would recommend it.

Maybe we could make a list of ways to enhance the chance.

I always thought "swimming at dusk with a dog" was a good one, but "wrestling each other on the surface whilst snorkelling/swimming" might just beat it.
