Unfortunately when I read this back, I can see I've contradicted myself here. No-ones called me on it so far. But I guess this is where we see that the world isn't black & white even if it looks that way when we're angry.
How can I defend free speech without extending that right to idiots who want to wave 'behead' signs? They might be dumb, but they're
allowed to be dumb and more than that
it's important that we protect their right to be dumb any way they like. Is the fact that they could be inciting violence (if anyone took them seriously) enough to override their right to free speech? I don't know.
I didn't like the neo-nazi 'hammerskins' having a white power music fest in QLD this year, they were also inciting violence and broadcasting hate, but again they were protected under free speech. And far fewer people got angry about it, even though they are nasty nasty people.
On the whole I would prefer to live in a society where we occasionally have to put up with a few hundred dumb extremists, rather than a society under oppression by dictatorship, religion, or other.
Kiteboy Dave - I read your comment and was about to say you contradicted yourself but then i saw this comment, so you stole my thunder. But i still have some thunder because you contradicted yourself twice.
Yes, you offended me, you just swore at God. Who as you might have read we believe is the same God as Allah, which was the God of Abraham and the God of Moses etc. And your right swearing at God (or my God) in order to prove a point that you have a right to free speech is still offensive. Even though you offended me and your comments are extreme, and as extreme as the beheading sign i believe from your comment above your showing honesty. So, ill say this. You said "essentially, (i have) firsthand knowledge that 99% of your demographic are great people" and at the same time you swore at their God because of idiots who were violent in Sydney. So you offended all those people who were good to you and all those people who meant well.
The next thing, do you think its right to swear at God because of what idiots are doing? So you'll swear at God for what these sydney siders are doing? What has God got to do with it? they are obviously not following the religion of God correctly by causing all this drama, they are not representing 99% of muslims but we will all swear at god because of it.
In regards to free speech, everyone should say what they want in this great democracy. But there are ways to say what you want. For example - If im against Australia's foreign policy, i could write a letter to the Government, make a petition, go to the media, say things against the current political party, start a protest etc.. what i DONT do is hold up signs saying behead Aussies or F*** Australia which many would find offensive and wanna go me in a ring.
Therefore although your free to say what you like I still believe you should retract the comment
