Mentone surfing lifesaving club woman.... absolutely no one in the water.... and compared to what I saw at Elwood yesterday, with windsurfers going around all the swimmers.... her comments seem as distant as pluto...(okay its a moon now)...

It's cool though... I didn't get all fired up... was polite and appreciated her kind assistance of pointing out the no swim sign that "used to be there"..

...so not bringing ill repute to law abiding windsurfers

I think there were no swimmers there because the thought of getting mouth to mouth from the mentone she-male terrified them out of the water!

Got out at Ricketts South - mental waves and super windy...

Gave it up after an hour to save myself for Sunday - great little play in the waves on a 5.0 at the front beach at Sandy Point, and then when the swell died down headed over for some freestyle on the flat water.

Great day, right up until I snapped the webbing on my harness and lost my harness bar.

I've broken lots of kit over the years, but never a harness...

SHQ/RPS here I come...

Agree I was really pissed that my 4.5 was to big on saturday at ricketts, but Sandy Point made up for it, Thats the 1st time Ive sailed in cross offshore conditions and really enjoyed it except walking back over the dunes into a head wind to get back to the inlet, no pain no gain.

I think you need a new fin too, yours was snapped in half

Yep, some really solid spocks and was starting to try for some switch-stance and clew first stuff when it broke...

Really in the flow in great conditions. Nevermind. Jman - next time you're out, take one of my freestyle boards for a play - Matt quite liked the Dweller!

I'll give credit where credit is due... I'd be much more confident of freestyle tricks using the Dweller than say a JP freestyle wave, as the board shape made a huge difference.

Now I should actually try some of them...

There's a monster bull ray that hangs around Rye Pier - approx 2.8 metres long. Seen him several times when scuba diving. Totally harmless as long as you don't do anything stupid.

Yeah, I can name one too... but as far as I'm aware, he's the only one ever.

It's been around for years, I can remember as a kid I used to see it swimming under the pier. There was a guy that used to try and catch it with a rod and line, he had it hooked up once but never brought in. just as well i recon too.
There's been 2 other deaths in Aus, 1945 at St Kilda baths and a 12 y.o kid up north in 1988, both stung in the chest area!

Compare that to car crashes or other normal daily accidents that result in death, doesn't seem so bad.

Saw the ray again last night, he got spooked and turned to defend himself when I was swimming towards him (didn't see him till late).... so I gave him right of way and swam around LOL.

I can see how someone could be stung in the chest though, if you are in shallow waters and spook one... well... could happen...

Definitely not a bull ray though, he is probably around 28" wide... (yes, I still use imperial)

If he is still around in the next few weeks I'll take a photo.
