Dave, we are just taking the rocks as well, hopefully it is mainly oysters and little rock. I am taking a hammer and screwdriver to smash/ remove larger ones that are on big rocks.
Good job yesterday. We cleaned up an area about 60-80m long down to the low tide point at Dorans road of rogue Oysters. Unfortunately the tide did not drop quite enough but we managed to make a noticeable improvement. Great to see 20 windsurfers ( and kiters), it really makes it an easy task with that many helping. Next clean up will be in November on a low tide, so stay tuned.
Kazza said.. Keep an eye out for spotted hand fish, as last time I found one in an empty oyster shell.....and I'm be serious too.
Must have been a bloody big oyster
It was a black one and about 2 inches long. Had the distinctive hand fins at the front and crowny thing on its head. Never seen anything like it before, must have been my lucky day.
Very low tide today at 6pm. these photos show the real extent of the oysters. Under that brown weed it is just thick with them. This is what is cutting up our feet, wrecking our boots and making it nearly unsafe for learners to use Dorans. For anyone one bad GYBE/ stunt, trip up and it could be very nasty! Last effort thanks to everyone we removed at least a 1.5 metre strip along the foreshore for about 100 plus metres . The not so low tide did not allow us to go out further. If we had the same numbers of windsurfers and more as last time we could put a real dent on them. We need a low tide, prefer in morning weekend....... does not have to be super low, as long as low enough to go out 2m or more than last clean up Anyone want to make the call on date and time ??? i will contact local dump sit to dispose of them same as last time .
Maybe we could make some sort of launching ramp (pallets) to walk out on and just keep cleaning that of oysters, anchor it down somehow. Big flat rock slabs of some sort maybe.
Be careful when you are removing oysters, because if some of the flesh stays in the water, all the oysters will start to spawn and you will have even more in few months... As one of the aquaculture technique to synchronize spawning in oysters is the stripping of few oysters.The ideal is to move the rocks with oysters in an area where the water doesn?t reach and wait they die by dehydration
Kazz, last time it really did not take long at all with 15 to 20 to clean up a lot of oysters. Ramp to crowded with kites, windsurfers and foilers all wanting to use it at once Rafa yeah last time we mostly removed rocks and all, We will take that on board though and not smash any or try and prise them off.

Why not lobby MAST, CCC or even state political candidates and sitting members to take up the cause. Allowing or even better suppling a small front end loading machine and operator for the day as a community service, instead of fiddling around the edges, effectively having minimal impact. Of course there was an improvement last time, albeit small. Get serious this time round perhaps ; using the machine to shift the oysters once separated from rocks is less labour intensive and will ensure a more thorough clean up . Brand it as an environmental remediation. After all the oysters are feral South Pacific Oysters. There is an election in the wind; take advantage and get one of the local hopeful candidates to add the issue to their "Platform" Aspiring politicians will stop at nothing to get exposure. Seize the moment Franklin voters.
that was the idea last time Steve , but as the tide only exposed a small area we managed to clean that whole strip the length of our windsurfing launch area. for those who were not there last time , some of commenting above.... it really dd not take long to effectively remove a whole 1.5 to 2 meter strip of oysters, from whole length of the parking area , thats 50 -75 meters. If we did that three more times we could nail them, it is not going to be fixed in one hit, but if we leave it it will be a useless spot to sail from in a few years.
when we do it again i suggest ....if it is only a moderate low tide we do the same as last time and clean a whole strip. .... if its super low tide we clean out some launch areas around the existing 4-5 entry paths, about 5m wide and then tackle the other spots if we have spare time, leaving the rest for another attack.
so pick a low tide on a saturday/ sunday morning .
What about both - late afternoon on Sat 18th Nov (0.49m at 4.08pm) or Sun 19th Nov (0.46m at 4.49pm) and - dinner time on Wed 6th Dec (0.1m at 6:13pm) and see if council can provide a big skip bin?

Ok i suggest we do next saturday to start with. with a low tide at 3 we can start at 130-2 perhaps and by just after 3 we would nearly be finished and we can still go for a sail? if there is wind .
