it will be really interesting to see how long it takes for Bjorn to get dialed in.

Hope he's not like the rest of us (pretty certain he's not)

Get down the run late on a cranking day only to realize he'd left his harness and booms at home

That reminds me. Did you see the video where Anders tried to start the run with his fin cover still on the fin! He is human after all! I can admit now that I have done that myself!

is Bjorn there yet?

quote :
Hey, after 55 hours of traveling we made it to the Luderitz Speed Challenge around 13:00. I did around 10 runs in great condition 30-40 knots of wind. First 47, then 48 knots then, 49, so improving! ;-) With 52.55 GPS top speed pretty happy about the first day on the water!! ;-) So long, Björn

With a couple of years more seniorority and "experience" you may be able to complete a run before noticing.

Who is going to crack the 100Km/h first?
53.71 is 99.47... so close.
My money is on the Terminator but is he wearing a GPS?

Speeds are so close that they are basically the same if they come from just one GPS just within margin of error.

Right on Lao. With a single gps, the error margins are commonly around 0.3 knots. Some test figures I have seen comparing gated runs to GPS runs show that most of the runs are well within this margin, but there are a few that are around that margin (both sides), so to be 99% certain you have gone at least the the claimed speed, you would have to deduct the possible error.

On the other hand, there is a good chance that the numbers could be actually representative of the true difference. [}:)]

So over 2 secs (if my maths is correct) a difference in distance of about 25cm from first to fourth which would be about a board length over the 500m. Pretty close.

This dude does 70 knots on ice (or is it land?);

www.gps-icesailing.com/default.aspx?mnu=user&val=41404&uid=248

I wonder what he's wearing besides a helmet.

I'm no scientist but it seems there is lot more drag going on under our feet that could be improved before we worry about what's on top. There is nothing very aerodynamic about A2!

I think the body air drag is not that critical because traveling at 50 kts in 40 kts of wind at a broad angle the apparent wind they're experiencing would be pretty light.

Yes the 58 kph in Dr Speed's diagram is less but not insignificant.

Putting in a few estimates, put in yours if you like, Cd for a person 1.0, cross sectional area presented to wind 0.5 sq metres, density of air 1.2 kg/m^3, 58 kph = 16 m/sec. Put those estimates in the drag equation ie. drag = 1/2 Cd A rho V squared and get drag = 76.8 newtons. (7.8 kg).

Looks like from Dr Speed's diagram only about Sin 45 of that is in direction of travel = 5.46 kg. The other 5.46 kg transverse to the direction of travel adds load to the fin, but the fin has a good lift to drag of say 20:1? 10:1 ?? (I've never been able to wind up a fin designer sufficiently for them to hazard a guess on this ) So maybe add 0.5 kg of extra fin drag to give 6 kg drag opposing the direction of travel. That's a fair bit, how much would streamlining reduce that by?
