It's a long way to come from Sydney. At least at Sandy Point there are other activities to keep us occupied on the no wind days. My question to the LG regulars and locals is what is the likelihood of wind mid to late Feb? Keep in mind that us Sydneysiders are quite content with 15-20 knots. Is it a regular seabreeze where one day tends to be a lot stronger than the others for the epic days and on others is a nice moderate breeze? I ask this cause at the Pit the locals wouldn't even contemplate sailing in 15 knots Just don't want to drive all that way on not sail once. And yes, I do know there is never a guarantee of wind ever but I'm just trying to guage what the average conditions are like.

My experience was there was a 25/30 kt seabreeze about 3 x a month Jan Feb about every 10 days with reasonable sailing in between

What are the water levels like atm, and how do they compare with previous years??

Further to Rexy's questions, what sort of water and air temps are we looking at in mid to late Feb??
In Sydney we tend to think of Adelaide as on par with us for summer temps but realising LG is quite a bit south and probably on par with southern Vic??
Its a bloody long way to go but definitely a "bucket list" place and we are frothing for it.

These wind roses take me back to my uni days. From memory, they show the direction the wind is coming from (points of a compass), the strength (the shaded colour), the duration (the length of the shaded colour), and then frequency (position relative to percentage rings).

They are either a brilliant invention and we will all be using them soon, or they never took off in the first place and I am the only one clinging to them.

Either way, in Jan / Feb / March, the afternoon winds are predominantly S to SE and can blow 25-30knots on average, but can peak in the low 30's. These are typical seabreezes in the south east of SA for this time of year.

The lake water temp in Feb on the lake is normally around 24 or so
the sea and bay here at the same time can be 10 yes you heard right 10.
because our coast is only about 20 k's from the continental shelf after a prolonged period of seabreezes the top layer of water is moved and water from deep moves in to replace it this deep water from the shelf comes from antartica, should be able to google bonney upwelling as this happens from robe to portland accross the border most summers, not good for the fisherman as the crays stop crawling.

Look like Lake George 2014 is a goer for me. Booked three weeks annual leave starting on the 2nd of February 2014. In the process of booking a cabin at the Southend Caravan Park. They gave me a good deal. It will be cheaper to get a cabin than to buy a new tent and have a powered site.

Looking forward to the trip as I haven't had a holiday for a while and this year has been tough.

I have two decent boards, a 105 and 135 Tabou Rocket. Should I take both or just the smaller one? I think just the smaller one with a 6.6m, 5.9m and 5.5m sails. Should I look at getting smaller sails? I wouldn't mind buying a smaller board too, around 80l slalom board so if anyone going to Beachport in February has something like this for sale for a decent price, let me know.

Just weighed myself this morning. 82 KG. I should go for a smaller board and sails so will keep on the lookout between now and Feb.


I have a few weed fins, including a 19cm MUF delta. I use it with my 105 with 5.9m and 5.5m sails.

It's great to hear that so many of you are planning trips to the 'G' this summer. I'm hoping to fit in a day trip before Christmas on a good forecast, and will be sure to post an update on conditions here.

Good fishing from the Beachport jetty, and great fishing from the adjacent beaches. A beach at the back of the town called 'Salmon Hole' is always good fun. If you have a 4wd, then there is great 4wd'ing and access to the stunning beaches between Beachport and Robe. There are plenty of great fishing spots along here.

Would it be wise to take a bigger board and sails too or unnecessary? I remember taking a bigger board and sails on a windsurfing trip to WA and never needing to use anything but a wave board and 5m or less sail size. It was a waste of time taking the bigger gear.

leave the 4.4 at home. Max wind speed is 30kts and very flat water. Never got off my 5.8 (82kg)

I,m no expert on the conditions but I use a 5.0 koncept just about all summer weigh 84, if you only have raf sails you will need the 4.4 as a big jump up to 5.5,

have had crew borrow my spare 5.0 fairly often when they couldn't hold down there 5.8 (hey tricky),

up to 34 SE forcast tommorrow on buoywether might have to get the missile out been a while as normally sail the surf till chrissie but the local pointer has been hanging around too much the last couple weeks so the lake might be a safer bet.

I was nursing a sore ankle last year so was holding back a little bit, got my best speeds on a 4.4 koncept, I'm 70kg, may have been a tad overpowered on the 5.0
I agree if you only have RAF sails bring the 4.4. it's not going to take up much room, I'll certainly be bringing mine.
