Got a chance to try a couple on starboard (my preferred direction) last night rather than the port-tack massacres of the last few days.

Damn deadlines! Windsurfing always stops me from meeting them! Flakas are ridiculously hard to learn... pros make them look so easy! Good luck for the comp... although I hate it when I learn a new move and then all of a sudden everyone can do them

Hi JB, it sounds like you are definatly good enough to start learning flakas. If you have started to get a feel for sliding manoeuvres and are competent at upwind 360,s you should definatly have a go!

My tips for learning would be:

Don’t be too powered up when trying your first attempts.
Bear off to kill the power from your sail
Try to pop off the back of a little piece of chop
Once airborne, you must spin slightly into wind, but the most important things are that you land nose first and that your front arm is totally straight out in front of you (towards the nose of the board) once you are in the air.
As the nose touches down, make sure that your backhand is tucked into your body (as with an upwind 360), your front arm is totally straight and then just as the nose makes contact with the water, you must kick out hard with your back leg to bring the tail around.
If you get the above sorted, the rest will just happen!

You don’t really need to think any more than this, just try to land nose first and make sure your front arm is straight - once you master this, the rest is easy!

It took me about 3 months to learn (solid sailing in Cape Town 2 years ago) but many people learn a lot quicker than this. Matt Pearch did one on his first attempt!

Closest i have got so far is round halfway - want ready for the slide - ended up sliding backward with no sail front foot still in the strap bend in a whack psition and pretty much laying on the board haha.
This weekend is the go tho!!!!
