The Pointman is a big unit, I saw him one day out the back at Melville doing his usual Mach 2 in 25knts a bit choppy, anyway the dismount was nothing short of spectacular, I thought he actually broke the river, he does hold down big kit in strong winds, no BS from him Justin!

I find it interesting that quite a few favorite kits include rather large sails, many people say that large sails are heavy and hard to handle.

Sean, what wind strength are you racing the 117wide on the world tour?

Depends on how 'gusty' the wind is. If it's a CONSISTENT 15-18 knots I can be on my 107L, but it never is ... it's always 12-25 knots so in that case I'm generally on the 117w and 8.6 (or 7.8) up to that kind of windstrength! It's actually not super hard to manage with a good fin in ... i'm not that heavy! 81kg right now...

With the right sail for the conditions, a large sail is made light and balanced. I find that a sail too small for the conditions becomes heavy so I'd rather be powered-up.

I used to own a cammed GTX 7.5 and when powered it basically held itself in position, it was actually difficult to slow down when fully powered sometimes!

It probably depends on how consistent the wind is too. I'd prefer to be powered up and a bit over powered with a larger board and sail, than be dropping off the plane every time the wind drops away to 5 knots.

If the wind is a consistent 15 to 20 knots I'd either be on a 6.6m or 6m sail and my Tabou Rocket 105. If the wind is up and down I'd rather be on my 7.3m sail and Tabou Rocket 135.

Well if the wind is consistent would you rather be on a small sail in stronger winds or the bigger sail is less wind?

Generally I'd rather be on the smaller gear in stronger winds though the water state would be a factor too. I prefer flatter water.

Where I sail we seem to go from 10-20kts gusty to 20kts + so I either have the 6.6m ,125ltre ,44cm fin for gusty or straight to the 95ltre ,5m & 3ocm fin..Rarely seem to get consistent 15-20kts..I'd use a 5.8m with the 95 for that but it's rarely used.

+1

It's generally more fun being on smaller gear. My fave combo in 25 knots is my RRD 90 XFire + 6.6 TR7, but this is only fun in reasonably flat water. If it's really flat (i.e. speed course flat) and windy (25K+) then I pull out the candy (Carbon Art SP47) and the fun really begins!!

30 degrees air, 24 degrees water. Sunny. High tide. Crystal water.
Weekday.
20 knot sea breeze.

5.5 and a 100 litre FreestyleWave.

I just love having three straps. Feels sporty. Easier. FSW boards gybe like they're on autopilot, and have both pop and speed.
These conditions and this setup the gear feels like an extension of your own body.

This is a good approach because 15-20 is quite a range.
In 14 -18 I use my light wind gear 111Futura, 6.4 Koncept 40 Canefire low end, 32 Vector high end
In 16 - 20 85 Sonic with 6.4 Koncept, 32 Vector

My favourite setup is definitely the 85 Sonic, 5.8 Koncept and 32 vector but I need 18+ for that

Can I hijack the thread and ask what is your favourite setup, ignoring wind speed?

For me at 95kg, it is a 90L and 5.2
Something about a sail in the middle of the range (like my wave sails go 4.2 - 6.2 roughly) that makes it sweet.

(If hijacks are not allowed cos it sounds all Al Qaeda and sets off the GovCo monitoring computers then I withdraw the question)

25-30K seabreeze and low tide at the Beaver.....

Hijacked away..The more ideas I get the better..I am relatively new to this sport and only have 1 set up..( 150 l exocet cruiser with 5.8 aerotec Sail...) I am planning on upgrading soon so thought it would be good to see what everyone else is doing as far as set up goes...

Realistically when I (92kg) go out the wind is building and or gusty so I'll start on my 8m slalom sail and 73cm / 115L slalom board. I'm generally to lazy to re rig so unless it get to a solid 20+ I'll stay on this gear. People have mentioned that my arms look longer when I sail this set up in 20+.

Otherwise I'd use my 6.6 with a 90L slalom board or FSW depending on the location.

Favourite set up in a consistent 20-25 is a FSW 78 with 5.2 or 5.8m. There's nothing better than being on a small snappy baord in consistent winds.

The gear you use really depends on your weight and skill level and what kind of sailing you are into - flat water freesailing, speed, waves...
So if you want ideas to suit your situation be more specific.

Nude Chopper 90 and Blade 6.2 on redline mast / enigma boom.

Super clean waves in this wind strength - 12 - 18 knots.

- and the big rig feels waay better than it has any right to - i think its because of all the super light components - light mast, Wave grenade Carbon Extension, the lightest and best carbon boom money can buy. i Can do all the jumps with this combo - except doubles - actually i cant do double fwds on anything -- too chicken.

This wind strength usually means that the crew are waiting on the beach for it to get windy - so its uncrowded too.
