I know PC, great idea, but a bit hard to teach a 1 and 4 yo. Maybe I'll just have to wait until they're bigger til I have a chance to get out there more often and improve my skill.

It's an odd thing but of all the windsurfer's I know around brisbane with kids the majority are in the 0-5yo age. The others have kids which are already grown up.

Howdy
My daughter is 2y 10months, has a little JP young Gun and a 1.2m Mistral Pluto sail, full carbon mast and a cut down lightweight boom. She loves it...she blasts along in 4" of water (cut down fin).

Footstraps and harness in a few years!

The joys of living in a Windsurfing Resort in Fiji....babysitters everywhere!

Hey Warren that is very impressive(not even 3). My son had his first windsurfing lesson last year when he was 5. He did quite well with his 1.5m rig, but prefers to sit on the front of my board and then complains if I am not planning cos he likes to go fast! I remember seeing a 0.9m hot sail at a demo day in west wittering UK a few years back and a guy said he was using the same sail to teach his 3 year old son, I didn't think that would be possible. I also have a 3 year old daughter, but she hates the water so will have to work on that.
Hows Fiji? been a lot time since i went on your windsurfing safari 1993 I think. Would be nice to come back one day and bring the family
cheers kellie

PC Simpson - nice idea I have tried this already with my 6 yo and he loved it, problem is he can only handle about 5 knots of wind max at the moment so I don't still get any time on the water when my biggest sail is a 5.5m wave sail and an 85 ltre board. May need to invest in some way larger gear.
I'm hoping as he gets older he will really get into it and want to go to the beach every weekend.

Thanks to everyone else for your suggestions, but it seems like I might just have to wait till they get a bit older.

I have been windsurfing for 15 years and before kids I was always one of the first on the water and the last one to leave, I had all day to wait around for the wind to pick up, now I am lucky if I squeeze in an hour or so per session cause of other family commitments etc or family not wanting to wait on the beach for me in 20 knots of wind. (which is understandable) I hate the wind if I am not windsurfing!

I have seen the slow decline on girls on the water in my local area and I can understand why now that I am a mum. Once you are a working mum your time is so taken up with just all the day to day stuff there is no time left for much else. (then you do feel guilty on the weekends if you want to spent the whole weekend windsurfing). The women I see now on the water all have grown up kids or no kids at all.

I started windsurfing about 26 years ago, then had 3 beautiful children and lots of arguments about whose turn it was to go windsurfing, (I* always lost) sometimes my girlfriend would look after them but I just had to grin and bear it until THEY GREW UP. HOORAY and I am not going to babysit the grandkids unless its nighttime and I can't go windsurfing. I sailed nearly every day last summer. IT WAS GREAT!!!! And I got to go skiing nearly every day this winter!! yAH OH YAY. HAPPY HAPPY HAPPY. Divaldo you are one unselfish sharing caring guy, cos I can see that you are very fair with Kim and sailing time. There would be more girls in the water if Dads took some responsibility too. I fully expect a few BITES now. no,....not literally

I've been trying to get the wife involved (no hidden agenda), she has issues with the 'cold' (vic winters) and wind (a 'minor' issue!?!), She loves water skiing (in summer only), I just need to convince her that w/surfing offers more freedom & enjoyment.

As for taking the toddlers out on the front of my board.....until I can 'safely' return them to the beach, this won't be happening! (I sometimes wonder if I'm going to make it back!?!)

My 2yr old daughter is happy standing on my lap, hanging onto my thumbs, swaying around calling "MUM - Look, I'm Windsurfing!!!".....the 4yr old boy would rather watch 'scooby-doo' vids!

Agree with you there Susie, I wont be offering to baby sit the grandkids in the future if it is a windy day. Only 2 more years until both kids at school, so will then have school hours a few days a week to get out on the water so that is something to look forward to. I sometimes have my mum and my inlaws look after the kids so i can get a sail during the week although I feel guilty as they also look after the kids for me while I am at work and it is not like you can schedule in the wind! so at short notice they are not always available.
Getting two new sails soon and hope it wont be long before I try them out. Got a new wave board in June and have only used in once
