eyeMhardcor has a point but my view is a bit different (ie. better).

Even if I'm way down wind of everyone, I can usually tell that I am going to get more out of the wave than anyone up wind. Just the vibe I get from most sailors. I'm not openly arrogant like eyeM, I just keep it to myself how good I am.

But I think what would really benefit everyone in terms of learning which waves to get and how to ride them would be if I am about to catch a wave, whether I'm upwind or downwind any people, if I suddenly decide to pull off the wave I will then shout out my intentions to do so. I think it would be polite and respectful if everyone let the wave go too. But then also, when I am getting a wave, I expect everyone to get off also. I know that sounds greedy but the bonus for them is that they get really good at picking the rare waves that I am not on. Therefore, their skill level goes up. Makes sense??

Don't know if the fella's where talking serious when they said if there a better sailor just drop in, don't matter how good you sail if you get the wave it yours, how are you going to improve if these guys are sailing with you. i'd like to see these guys sail somewhere like maui where 99% of sailors are better than them, they wouldn't even get one wave. and what if the guy you keep on dropping in on is alot bigger and meaner once you see him back on the beach, no thanks, keep it real and show some manners guys. we should be encouraging people into the waves not scaring them off.
And the rule about the guy on the way out has right of way, it's so the guy heading out don't get smashed in the impact zone if he's plugging out, gives him some room to get over the waves if there isn't someone right in front of him.

I've had it happen a couple of times that I'm coming in, not on a wave or anything, and try to give way to someone coming out and they give way the same way... we do the "footpath shuffle", both of us changing course at the same time until we either figure it out or both stop with a confused look on our faces.

Does that over-ride the traditional sailing rule of starboard tack has right of way?

I can understand if you're trying to get out through a big break and there's only a limited amount of wave that you can hit to get through, but at other times, shouldn't the normal sailing rules: port/starboard and windward/leeward apply?

It does in W.A. mate . Starboard rule applies to flat water and out the back but not in the break.

Yes, in WA Starboards rule OK. Anyone not on a Starboard must give way to Starboard riders.

yea h the wave was yours. so if you cant run him over wait for him 2 go 2 his car and when now ones looking belt him in the face with your mast extention. he wont be doing that again.
