you didn't broadcast the age of your sail though. Or was that part of the game?

The answer is, the "LUFF" was way off for my 400 mast, which was due to an older 5.3 sail. Like I said ealier, the luff in the Neilpryde and North sails and possibly more sail manufacturers are substantially different in early 2000 year models, verses the present year models. Keep that in mind. This was a learning experience for me and all of you that didn't know about this. By the way, this was supposed to be a fun game, not to bring out arguments.

Me not listing the age of my sail wasn't a game at all. Nobody asked the age of my sail. If someone new the answer, they would have known the sail was older and that's why the 400 mast didn't work in my 5.3 sail. Slam dunk there in a nut shell.

Anymore questions on this issue, please go back and read my original post in this thread. The question is very straight forward, and will eliminate any repeated responses here.

Looks like you failed your homework IMCS of 21 is for 430 masts, as far as I know 400 masts are 19 IMCS.

Also your hard top mast on a CC sail and Neilpryde sail

Sounds to me like you ride the short bus. You've probably had that sail for a while, plenty of time to establish the correct mast length.

Entirely off topic, I have a fin that doesn't work with my new board. Guess why?

Its a quad and I only have one fin.

Aus729, read my answer, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to get it. It's a 5.3 sail on a 400 mast. Hello, can you not comprehend that. I hope I'm not talking to a of 3rd grader here.

The answer to this a luff measurement issue. Nobody here could figure that out.

So doing your homework did not include asking if the sail would fit on a 400 mast....to obvious...I assumed it was a North Voodoo ...that really was cursed....

Nah, nobody here uses sails from early 2000!!

Just goes to show, when upgrading a quiver, you have to replace just about everything. Just been through that recently. Hadn't invented skinnies in early 2000's, had they?

I never needed small gear until I moved to Oregon, so this is my first 5.3 sail. It was in great condition, so I purchased it. I used it on a 430 SDM mast for the last couple years and sailed great. But with seeing that people were using a 400 with a RDM, I thought I would upgrade. Never thought this would happen. Your learn something new every day.

Rob,

Sometimes we like to push the envelope a little if you know what I mean. Sometimes there is wiggle room, and other times there is not. You never know unless ya try.

Who uses sail surface area to determine the appropriate mast length??!!? I assumed it was "no one" but I guess it's "one".

Cambodge,

How else would you possibly find the appropriate mast size if you're not finding it off the sail?

I honestly don't know if you are serious. Changing to an rdm doesn't mean you can go 30cm shorter, they aren't magical.

Mclovin,

First off I wanted to upgrade to a RDM. Secondly, I was seeing most all newer 5.3 sails take a 400 mast. Never occurred to me that the luffs of older sails are so much different.

Bottom line is, a relatively newer 5.3 sail calls for a 400 mast,.and why not rig a 400 on my 5.3. Then I find out my older 5.3 sail works on a 430 mast not a 400 mast. That's all I'm saying.

I guess my next question is, what am I not saying to you in order for me to explain this any easier . I feel like I am going in circles saying the same things to some of you, almost repeating stuff over and over. Read all the threads here, it Will help eliminate this confusion.

I think we all get it. Just amazed that you would willingly admit to buying the wrong sized mast.
It's time for a new sail anyway, I'm sure one of the locals would have a 3 year old sail they'd give you for free.
The difference of a new sail on rdm will be huge compared to what you are running.

I'm scratching my head, trying to use every tactic known to man to explain this to you. But I realize why bother trying to explain something to a feline. They just keep meowing for more!!

Mclovin,

I have no problem giving the whole story and admitting I got the wrong mast. What is there to hide anyway, no shame in that. Besides, now I have a RDM that will fit a new generation 5.3 sail.
Why were are at it, what year do you think the luff specs changed to the most current ones? Or in other words, when did the 5.3 sails change to requiring a 400 mast?

That totally depends on the sail brand and sail model in that brand. I'm sure you could still get a 5.3 that rigs on a 430.

A severne convert 5.4 rigs on a 430 and a naish chopper XL fits on a 370........sail designers are more like cats than dogs.

As long as the sail says 400, I should be set, and the luff should match up as well to the mast? Is that right ? At least this has been my experience with larger sails.

Well the Naish Chopper is a whole nother ball game. They are measuring that sail in T-shirt sizes. The XL Chopper sail is measured out to be like a 5.8 size, just chopped down with lots of power.

Here is a better pic of the mast from Bic Sports of California.

Next to the pic, it has a whole write up on the mast, also displaying the year it was made 2015.

The Gladiator and Katona masts are 2016 models on Maui Sails webpage. But we are going off track here, because the mast is fine, it's the rigging it in the sail that's the problem.

Sorry off topic (that seems quite animated ) but this Mauisails mast is definitely hard top.

Gladiator and Katana masts indeed started back in 2014. If you read the Mauisails mast page they explain the CC mast development was done in conjunction with the TRX (2014).

I know that not everyone can afford new or newish sails but I would have thought that a 16/17 yr old sail would first be a freebie and second not worth mucking around with as sail design has progressed soooo much since then and a 4yr old sail would be better. I know its a wave sail and maybe not as technical to use as a race sail BUT.

I also want my 10 minutes of life back

You guys have probably noticed by now that I am a very positive, optimistic individual. I love life and have always tried to live each day to its absolute fullest. Some of you seem like real characters and some seem like quality individuals. But I can say this, there are always a few who like to spoil the fun, and bring negativity to the table. It's a shame, but it's just life. Negative people hate seeing uplifting people happy. True fact of life. Just have a look through these threads, and the negative people stand out like sore thumbs.
