Haha, we are all at it at west kirby, several of us knocking up these funny looking fins. We stand at the our local beach comparing daft looking fins, all good fun though. Funny thing this, since we all started trying to make a light wind power house, it's been blowing it's bloody t*ts off at west kirby!!!! :)

Even for only this reason
Those pesky wind Gods know were onto them , so now they try to overload us.

My little project . Had a 33cm fin that was a bit on the small side for my 125 techno with my 95 kg and sail range of 7-8.5 sails. Symmetrical foil parallel to base.

Nice work, you've put us all to shame with that very professional looking bit of kit ????

would love to know what materials you've used for the wing and how you've attached the two together.

Wings are plastic surf ski fins, i ground 25 mm wide and 2 mm deep out of wings where they but against fin and ground the fin down same giving me 10 mm top and btm of wing to layer 2 x glass cloth strips into the ground out part.

I saw this video, published a few days ago, and recalled this thread.

I like the concept of the smaller foil at the point of the fin, which provides enough lift to make the board plane easier, but not enough to get the board out of the water. According to the producer, it's supposed to provide a 50 lbs upward push at 10 knots wind. The images are also very promising. It's easier to produce too, in G10.
When the big names realize that their huge foils are too much of a hassle for the weekend surfer (IMHO), hopefully they will turn to something more affordable like this.

(Disclosure: I have no connections to the producer of the fin, neither I'm going to buy it until it's available in a EU shop. I just like the concept).

Pirrad: Could we have some feedback, please?

I just found this forum and thread. I purchased the FRP fin shown in the last post. It was useless but had a lot of lift so I cut off the bottom wing and attached it to a 50 cm race fin. Then it was an awesome fin for early planing! Check out pictures and all my posts about it here:

Here's how I made my foil assist fin:

Finally somebody that used the FRP mini-foil fin. I was very curious and I thought it needed some refinement.
In the meanwhile I improved my sailing a lot, so I can compensate the slow winds a bit more.
Additionally, where I windsurf (Swiss lakes and lake Como), there is either no wind or at least 10 knots, so a mini foil would not bring a huge advantage.

...I purchased the FRP fin ... It was useless

Hi. I had similar experience with frpgear fin foil. Paid $100 on ebay for the same old model. They do not sale it any more. It worked well for my long old Mistral. It was completely useless for my custom formula. Predictable - the fin area on that old model is just too small for wide boards. Instead of purchasing a new fly-fin for $700 for my formula I just cut the original frpgear 2018 model in the middle, sharpened the stubs and laminated new middle fiberglass section on a waxed concave-bent sheet of 1/16 Lexan from The Home Depot. Then shaped the new section on a belt sender. New longer fly-fin now works on my formula. No spinouts and lighter wind performance. I think I can add more wing area by over moulding the existing wing. In this respect I have to say that the first frpgear 2018 model was not completely useless since I was able to get a better planning on my longer board and with longer fin it works on my formula. Frpgear -700 model would probably deliver similar result on formula but I saved some cost by using the budgetary model 2018 + two days of work. I think the most valuable part of frpgear fly-fins is the integration of the fin with the wing - the T-join. The way it is designed and made seems to be very smart. It delivers high strength in small cross section. For cost saving, I would only buy FRPGear T-joints (or used frpgear) to make my own fly-fins.
