Gentlemen, please. Ladies, too. Can I have a minute of your time?

The words, "plan" and "plane" have different meanings. They are not interchangeable.

To plan something, is to prepare for a future event.

In our sailboarding context, to plane means to glide, or soar. Derivations of "plane" include "aeroplane", and "aquaplane". In
the 1930's, the Hudson Motor Car Company sold a model called a Terraplane; presumably, it could glide over the Earth.

The present participles of plan and plane are "planning" and "planing", respectively. Present participles are the "ing" words.

So, why mention this? Well, I seem to be reading about a lot of sailboards that are planning. Planning what, I ask? As inanimate objects, I don't think that sailboards are capable of planning anything. Or, at least, that's my experience. But, I might be wrong.

Consider some extracts from recent Seabreeze posts, all from different authors.

. . . At the lower ends, it really depends on your ability to get a board planning in marginal conditions, but . . .

Poster B said..
. . . This can be done on any style of board with footstraps in planning conditions. If you can jump it . . .

Poster C said..
. . . I was fully planning so would of (sic) ended really bad (sic) if my 40cm fin had hit him!

Poster D said..
. . . Nobody wants to sails (sic) non-planning, nobody. the designers of this "convertible" are trying to rid of this non planning sailing which is awesome . . .

(I didn't understand any of that)

Poster E said..
. . . Several sailors, one Kite and one W/S continually overtook me fully planning up wind . . .

Poster F said..
. . . if a break is crowded, it's the first who is planning on a swell outside the break . . .

Poster G said..
. . . in less than perfect conditions, fast, smooth gybing, early planning and a reasonable amount of hidden volume . . .

(and, as a last example; I think the point has been made)
Poster H said ..
. . . Thats (sic) a massive board and you wont (sic) get planning better on anything else! . . .

Oh, well, I suppose it could be worse. Here's something from the kite forum:-

anonymous kiter said ..
. . . no slap or facespray in the chop. Plains really early and adds a good 5+ knots to any kites (sic) low end. . . .

Good grief!!!

I may be corrected, but I think these "ing" words are the "gerund" rather than present participle. I do however appreciate the principle (not principal) or your post.

Planning/ planing. Jybing/jibing. Don't care. We understand. Just don't give me ****e like. "Planning the implementation of a directional modality reset (jibe) given a state of suboptimal surface continuities (chop) necessitates enhanced learnings in directional orientation (good balance)".

One of the reasons I love the windsurfing community is the lack of judgement of others who participate in this diverse recreational endeavour. I'm not sure if you are being light hearted about your difficulty in reading/comprehending/understanding a simple grammatical error but it's not hard for the reader to "autocorrect" this while reading. In the context of windsurfing it's pretty obvious (even to someone who is so bored reading windsurfing forums that they have to nit pick spelling and grammatical errors) what the writer is trying to convey.

For whatever reason some people didn't have the privilege of a decent State education, let alone a Grammar School education. They may not even be aware of the mistake.

Consider also most computers and devices "autocorrect" and spellcheck as you write. The word "Planning" would generally be used far more frequently than "Planing". It makes sense that many of these grammatical errors are as a result of this.

If you are so bored that you need to vent on this (obviously I am) I have intentionally left several errors in this post. Have fun finding them (should fill your day).

Clarence,

I like your picture of "Scuffy the Tugboat". That takes me way back to my early childhood. I loved that story. My mom used to read it to me all the time. That's a classic lil golden book!!

A clever melange of mustelidian speech elements, nicely obtuse, but nothing compares with Deepak Chopra. He is literally awesome.
