yep, fast boards...........slow rider, ha, i've been windsurfing about 7yrs, the gps has been a big part of it for me, and over the yrs it has played a role in seeking conditions, flatness, and equipment choices, at this stage it feels like i could start appreciating the extra speed to come from a speed board, but i mainly go about the same speed on all of the boards, about 32-35kts, about 37kt on speed boards, it looks like sail size plays a big role in speed and fins, the naishes are really short, about 210cm, and really flat, so there really only good in flat stuff, where we sail is crazy thick weed, catapult heaven, so the naishes are good because there is no nose for boom to hit, the 121l falcon is a great light windier for my weight as it feels not as wide at the backend as more race boards are, eg, my 121 falcon is no where near as wide at the tail as the 121jp, and at my weight, and the sail sizes im using, that suits me, im always thinking about gear, lately i've been thinking that i might just get the 113 2013 falcon, the 2013 87l isonic, 2013 jp speed board, 2013 jp light windier, or about a 140l free ride tank, most of my sailing is in between 0-30kts, with most time spent in about 5-20kts, it feels like as i get better, i have less interest in sailing bigger sails, i still spent a lot of time on the 7.7h2, but it starting to feel like the real fun starts with a 7m evo2 on my 110l naish, ha, alright man, now lets here your story
Lot of good info in there Milsy sailing in 30+ kts would be brown shorts time for me.
My story is much shorter. Been at it 5 months - got an old Bic battleship back in feburary and got hooked. I did a lot of reading and research and got a secondhand kit in april from windsurf perth made up of 145 2012 JP Funster, 121 2006 Starboard Carve, along with two masts and 3 sails, booms etc. Since then I have bought a harness, and after some tuning tips from PhilSWR, and a 7.7 H2, I have been happily plonking around in the harness each weekend in the pitiful excuse of winter wind I get in Coffs Harbour.
I'm looking forward to my first "windy" season, learning to water start etc, and I'm looking out for a faster freeride board around the 130ish Lt mark now - the funster feels too big and heavy and the carve is a little too small for use a light wind board. Although, I'm a little worried I might find myself on the carve most of the time when the wind picks up. Really depends if I keep the funster or sell it - in winter I'll need a light wind board. I've still got the Bic monster I suppose but it's soooo heavy OMG.
