^ absolutely. It's all about earning Aussie/US dollars and paying expenses in Rupes.

I know there are a hell of a lot fly in fly out guys in the mining industry living there which would be perfect.As far as work goes if you have experience in marketing or IT you will find work at some of the large hotels.A mate of mine is about to move there in the next month or so,what he has been doing is renting Villas for a year at 12k which you must pay up front,then he puts them in a holiday rental pool and rents them out for 200 US per night,this covers his own Villa rent for the year and all other expenses,he is in the real estate industry he plans on getting into this field while living there,he said there is more opportunity in Bali than home.

More opportunity but a lot of risk. One bloke i know woken at 3am with m16s under his nose and told to leave the country the next day. Lost his business, house everything. Pay the right bribes and all isgood get it wrong and it will end in tears.

A good friend of mine has a property in a primo spot in Lombok. His neighbours last year (whites, not locals) were hacked up with machetes by a local gang. I don't think they were killed but they received a proper beasting and my mate hasn't really been back to his house there since.
We speculated about what the real motives behind that attack was, but it was just that; speculation.

Still...I'd personally be happy to take the risk if I was in a financial position to do so. I've never had any dramas during my countless visits to Indonesia, the Eastern Block in Europe, Northern Ireland during troubles and some other very sandy countries. Here in Freo on the other hand.....

You can fly budget out of perth starting from around $300 return. I think jetstar have a special running at the moment for $315

I know Garuda used to fly from Port Hedland a few years back, the flight was just under 2 hours.

Jetstar are starting flights to lombok from perth several times a week which is pretty exciting and will save heaps of travel time.

Thanks I always had the impression it was a 2 hour flight.

geez Suba might have to call you on that one... if you visited northern Ireland during "the troubles" you would have been very very young plus the eastern block refers to when "the wall" was up, you would have been very,very,very young to have visited that region during those times. I didn't mean 'the troubles' I meant when there was trouble going on at that particular time. ie: There were riots and shooting still going on as it was around marching season. We had someone from PIRA (apparently) rock up in a car with his balaclava on and fire a pistol into the crowd we were in during the end of one of the bonfire nights. He got off 4 rounds before he had a stoppage and he then VERY quickly made his retreat. I was never in an direct danger really and it was all exciting at the time but now I can't help but shake my head at how ****ing stupid the people are there.

As for eastern block; maybe (definitely) a poor choice of words. Obviously I don't mean during the cold war, I just mean eastern european nations that still look like they are stuck in the dark ages and feel very much like they are 3rd world. I was only over there to climb. We just refer to them as East Block countries as that is very much how they still feel.

Bad choices of words, but certainly not lies. But anyhow, all terribly boring stuff.

Back to living it up in Indo....
