Hopefully one of the baited lines they've se up there catch the farker if it's still lurking. But yeah you'd definitly have rocks in your head to paddle out there today...

just made reference to this on the other thread, I know we have the ability to do some stupid stuff but that was about the dumbest thing I've seen for some time. I asked my wife what her reaction would have been if I'd still gone up there as planned, lost for words she was! first time in a long time. So, either these guys had not heard about the tragic loss of life or they are complete losers.

Worse than going out today, at least one dude surfing near to the attack yesterday was told to get out of the water, he did, no worries. But drove around the point to near North Rocks and continued surfing, didn't bother to tell the few guys out about the attack until DEC asked them to get out of the water there too. In my books that's fricken dumb and selfish.

Disclaimer - I was on the beach in Wedge at the time so wasn't in the water at North Rocks but that is direct from a mate who was.

The beach where the attack occurred remains closed today but this has not stopped people venturing into the water near where the fatality happened.

“There was a lone surfer out there this morning…people that love the water and love waves, that's what they live for, they weigh up the risks,” Fisheries Departman spokesman Mr Cappelluti said.

Granted, the chances of coming into contact with the same shark at the same beach the next day are near on impossible, but personally i think paddling out at the same beach so soon after a bloke lost his life is morbid and at the very least hugely disrespectful. Remains still have not been recovered. Poor form by whoever that 'lone surfer' was.

I've got no problem with people surfing at all, nor do I see it as disrespectful. If anything it's a tribute to a mad keen fellow surfer, if my head wasn't stuffed full of cotton wool I know where I would've been.

It's just stupid mate. All the breaks up & down the coast and they go to the one where a 5m white pointer has just eaten someone. It's not like the surf is pumping there anyway. They either don't know or they've seen Point Break too many times and think they're Patrick Swayze. It's not crazy, or hardcore or extreme, it's just moronic. It's like the swimmers all flocking down to cott to go for a swim after the swimmer got eaten, like they had some point to prove. Look at me mom I'm base jumping without a parachute!

Or they just happened to be up that way, saw uncrowded waves, considered the odds and went for it. White sharks move around. They cruise at around 3km and are constantly moving. In all likelihood the shark is down in Perth now. I consider shark attacks as independent variables...where one attack does not always have an influence on the probability of another.

Having said that, would I surf up there yesterday on the mushy crappy wedge has been producing for the last few days just after a fellow surfer has been killed? No. Would I care if others did? No. Don't jump gun and say they are just doing it to be macho.

I've meat a few Kneelos who know you over the last few weeks. Most of them surf the area in reference to attack. With that and knowing Doggie, GPA and smicko, Sat morning was a long time coming until i saw posts on line.

I was the first ranger there the other day, half hour after it happened still spinning from it. We surf there pretty regularly and keep thinking that myself and the other ranger there Saturday who if we weren't working may have been there with kids, dogs and wives either on the beach or in the water. It was a beautiful day, why wouldn't you be surfing!
We put up 8 shark/ beach closed signs from Magics through to Northy and during Saturday night 5 went missing WTF. We are trying to warn people and possibly save lives and some arse dragging moron/s go and pinch them Saturday night. If you know anyone who may have one of these signs in a shack or dunny or whatever please Pm me there's a few crew who may want to have a quiet word.
To Ben and his family and friends condolences and respect.
To the ski driver and Ben's best mate, you guys deserve bravery medals of the highest order.

Have a look around the Wedge settlement, how many stolen street signs to you see there?

Locals will hang the signs in their shacks "pool room" or even use them on the really good days to try and ward off the metro crowds

Yeah the ear thing, pain is over now and the healing started. It's so damned itchy it feels like ants crawling around inside my head.

And yeah I would've surfed that wave if it was on. Ironically it feels like the safest wave up there, most of the waves up there break in deepish water, this one you can pretty much stand where it peaks, there's a fairly narrow channel about 10-12 ft deep between the bank and the reef out the back and I can only imagine the shark was cruising through there when it came across Ben.

I would guess that I've averaged 150-200 hrs in the water here the last couple of years and I've seen two noahs there, one about 3ft the other 5 or 6. Conversely I've seen a LOT of big bronzies at other breaks in the area and one Kombi with fins at the glamour break south of here.

It's just pure bad luck that this happened.

Considering the amount of police and other crew involved in the area searching for the shark the day after, Wedge would probably have been the safest place to surf along the entire coast line...

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think the Rescue and Police helicopters were only up the day it happened and they were gone when I left around lunch time? boats are good for fishing from, not necessarily to spot sharks from.
