QLDsurfers, dont let this happen there are heaps of cases in WA ranging from bunbury to northern perth beaches where development has destroyed decent waves. stand tall and tell them to get F**ked. Fight hard. Take it to parliament. You guys have such a good case with the greenies(sigh) and the amount of tourism surfin on the goldy brings to you local economy. a cruise ship will only bring a percentage over a percentage of the year.

Protesitng is one thing but a viable alternative plan is better.

Day visitors from ships will provide a bit of cash. maybe a meal, trinketts theme park visit. Not that big a spend versus capital cost and well as potential evironmental and social impact.

If Brisbane establishes itself as a starting and end point of cruise ships GC is close enough to be an add on few days at the beginning or end trip of a cruise then capturing decent tourist dollars.

Its also not that bigger bus trip down for a day trip from Brisbane.

Need to show mayor and politicians how big a vote will be against this.

In relation to Bunbury I am not sure but the Dawesville Cut is a prime example of lost waves.

Sorry for replying to myself but rather than trying to change nature to get these ships in would it be better to get a rail link through GC to Brisbane from Sydney.

I would rather get on a train and get on and off for a few days Port Macquarie Coffs etc Great train trips of the world draw a lot of people and getting from Sydney to Cairns would have to rate up there.

The dawesville is a good example about how sand migration has been interrupted. A bit before my time but overheard a crusty old dude speaking about Silver Sands being an awesome beach break back in the day, but being destroyed almost overnight by the construction of the 4 groynes along the beachfront.

I fully support saving staddie, and agree this mayor sounds like an absolute wanker, but everyone seems to forget that it's a man made wave to begin with. Unfortunately it is all to often that the breaks nature gave us are disposed of without a thought or care (anyone remember Dixie's in mandurah before the cut went in or the left they used to call " the tip"?)

Its not just Dawesville but at the main entrance of Mandurah there has been some great waves disappear on either side of the entrance.

**** me, studying marine science and conservation often simply feels like a waste of time when time and time again all we hear about are more proposals to do more things that keep screwing around with our environment. I'm no hippy, I drive a 4Wd and go on plane journeys, but bloody hell, what is with Australia and it's insistence on progressively stuffing up our beaches?

All this for a cruise terminal? What a ****ing joke. Would be interested to see the environmental impact assessment for the idea. If it's anything like what happened when they re-dredged Fremantle Port then it's going to be a sad future :(

Soleman is right, you guys really need to fight this one. If it goes ahead and the dredging boats arrive, well, the ocean always needs more artificial reefs

Yep, this one is great. It would put the marina pretty much out the front of my house. Stoked.

Silly thing is there is already a cruise ship terminal in Brisbane in an enclosed water port, at the Spit they are trying to propose bringing ships into water that regularly breaks between pretty narrow walls.

The proposal would mean constant dredging costing more than the revenue it would create. Nothing I have seen even begins to make sense, crazy...

Yeah I dont get the whole idea

Brisbane has a port and should be pushing for better facilities to cater for the visitors.

Surely day trips could be put together to bus the tourists down.

It just like canal developments, developers make the profit and run and then residents look to government to dredge when they silt up. This will be no different. It will become the states problem to dredge or move sand on while developers take the upfront profits.

FFS, the whole Gold Coast is one big development. How do you think the surf at Sth Straddie happened? There's this little thing called a sand pumping jetty that effectivly dredges the channel and dumps it at south straddie making nice banks.
Wave break island, that everyone thinks we may loose to developers, is - wait for it - man made.
If we were all so anti development shouldn't we be lobbying to turn off the pump and tear down the sea way walls, dredge up wave break, and let nature do its thing. Oh, thats right, the Nerang river will then be prone to flooding which will probably affect your property value.

But thats ok, youy can then head down to Byron to live, because there's a shining example on how to run a town into the ground by choking development.

Allowed to have a point of view.

Is there a line in the sand.

The marina proposed adjacent to the airport when you consider the scale to me looks like a giant sand trap. Why would we want to risk the waves in this region any further.

If I lived in Brisabane I would be fighting to make the existing port the place they stop.

Still gives tourist operators the opportunity to offer day trips, add on stays down to the Gold Coast.

There must be better opportunities with less impact on the coast to pursue that doesnt run the risk of leaving an ongoing dredging cost on taxpayers/rate payers
