I heard that a couple of blokes got 'chased' out of the water and that a number of sightings had been made.

I heard it from a mate who's mates brother lives down there...

That said - it could have been all BS and car park 'chinese whispers'... or DS tactics to put off the metro surfers!

Nar its not bs we were about to get in water when everyone came racing in.

I'm interested where that was stu. No need to give the surf spot just the location.

In the sw region. Couldn't see anything from shore but supposedly a big one out there. Didn't end up surfing after seeing the look on crews faces

Mmmmmm not so keen on surfing by myself anymore. I've seen more noahs in the last 2yrs than I have since I worked on the trawlers as a teen. Has been lots of big curious Bronzies around of late.

Not BS. One bloke said at one stage he had about 5 bronzies or tigers circling him. Not swimming past but circling
You blokes make sure you come down and surf the beachies
I surf where someone was taken by a shark. I'm often out on my own. Usually that's the way I like it but don't mind when 1 or 2 come out to join me.
Was out there with Hilly last January and saw a fin. Not a dolphin, not a fish but a shark fin. Cool to see and just puts things in perspective that we are not alone out there.
I love surfing this wave and will keep on surfing it. Just like my old local it seems to suck me in.
I'm addicted

Supposed American data of statistical chances of things happening : note shark attack. While possibly not legit or representative of Aust, it gives you a much better understanding of the scope of everyones fears.

Oh well, perfect weather, local break cranking, no news of shark sightings? Everyone can stay on land while I hedge my bets of being more likely to winning a Hollywood Oscar

they've always concerned me but during the late 80's and 90's it just seemed that you had to be extremely unlucky to get taken. Surfed plenty of places (offshore) that are the ideal hunting ground, deep channel and plenty of prey. I will not surf them anymore, which really pisses me off. A few stories of late certainly has me looking around a bit more when in the water and being a bit more thoughtful about the spots we surf down here, good thread Zuke.

what are the south aussies doing, they still have sharks but less attachs, should we be doing something that they are. Do they only surf with a few mates etc???

We're not doing anything different to you guys. I reckon us and you WA boys and girls are the only one's that really understand what it's like to have to surf with this in the back of our minds. East coast have got it pretty good I reckon. Waves and noah's under 3 metres (generally speaking).

I know the topic is aimed mainly at WA locals but I find myself surfing lesser quality waves when I'm surfing solo. A couple of better breaks over my way that are also very sharky. One particular they say is a white breeding ground, and I can't bring myself to surf it when solo. I have done but I start to freak myself out too much to enjoy the session. Sucks really. Hasn't been an attack there for some time but the last one took him whole.

Fark the stats of this or that happening before a shark attack. 3 fatalities in the space of 2 months within 350k's of each other would be enough to put anyone on their backfoot IMO. I still find diving on tanks more sketchy mentally than surfin but.

just a thought didnt some brainiac on the council buried a decomposing whale on near a populated beach near scarbs about a year and a half ago

just another thought it take a while for a whale to decompose and if they buried it on the beach then its just one big shark magnet could that be the reason the sharks are coming close to the beach or is it just bad luck with big teeth

i surf alot on my own a very remote locations i guess im just selfish and in the past year and a half i have seen 4 sharks couple of bronzies and one that made me find out wat colour adrenaline is i look at it this way its the one you dont see that will get you

the best advise i can give anyone is to remain carm and dont panic stop splashing around and try to keep you heart rate down wich is impossible to do and for fark sake dont puch it you will only piss it of

after all were playing in there play ground

A few months ago we parked the dinghy a little too far out at back at the Alkimos. Worst paddle to and from the dinghy in my life, I thought every paddle was going to be my last. I don't like swimming several Kms out to sea.

OK so i claim to have a bit of knowledge on Sharks having read and studied them for too long. But i have never seen anything of size in the water whilst surfing. Nothing over 4 foot or so . What did you do? did you just paddle like stink or watch it swim past then paddle in? Also when did you see it, distance of or once it was right on top of you? I'd love to here some info like that from those unlucky or lucky enough to have witnessed it

Sunday watched episode after episode of Shark Man of Fox. Great series and a real testament to what some scientists are going to protect GW's. After watching them i think im a little more worried about Squid after seeing how aggressive those little bastards can be. Especially when they aren't so little

Anyway i saw this link today. Interesting bu obviously not up to date as yesterday was watching tagged sharks around the Sea of Cortes.

A couple of years ago I was racing to get in the water at my local as just one mate out.

As I was putting on my wetsuit he came in and ran to tell me that he had just seen something big cruise by. He then left.

I then waited about an hour for at least one other person to show up to paddle out with (the old 50/50)

Waves were perfect and it was driving me nuts but just needed someone else in the water.

I think the change for me is I used to love the solo surfs now I like a bit of company to keep the mind off the subject.
