Exactly.
I say Cott is my local because I grew up there and still live within walking distance. It's my local because it's usually the first place I'll go check out and the place I surf the most often. Despite what Legion might think, growing up and being in the water at a certain spot your whole life does make it your local. Regardless of whether or not I'm part of the 'pack'.

Regardless, the whole 'locals only' thing is just pathetic really. I don't care who someone is or where they're from (local, tourist, north of the river what ever) if they paddle out and show respect (that is; not dropping in, not paddling directly to the one take off spot, not snaking and so forth) to everyone else out there then they have as much right to ride the wave as anyone else.

I do my best to be polite to everyone else in the water when I'm surfing. If I wreck someone's ride by accident I'll paddle over and apoligize. If someone screws up my ride I wont immediately blast them with insults and threats. That's why I see myself as having as much right to waves as anyone else out there.

I can attest to the fact the camera will never get up and going unless they put a guard on it 24/7, the local groms will see to that!

We don't need anymore people, even if a surf-cam means 10% more people turn up on an already busy day, that is too many. Unfortunately Surf Beach can turn into a seething mass of blow-ins with bad attitudes. What annoys people the most is when a car load of crew turn up, paddle out and start frothing and scratching at every single bump or ripple that happens to be in their general vicinity.

When it is crowded here, surfing almost becomes impossible. Rent-a-crowds with bad attitudes make it worse. Spread out, be patient, just because someones on a peak that happens to peel off 50m to your left, doesn't mean you have to paddle over there and sit so close your touching shoulders! Stay where you are, one will come, chillax people!

News flash bro - every spot within spitting distance of the burbs is a free for all.
I agree with Suba that respect and courtesy goes a long way but for me, i would rather put a needle through the eye of my penis before I join the circus you have going down there.

It's a funny situation nowdays, with the advent of the surf forecasting websites and webcams the level of dedication to the surf check or stumbling upon a break going off with no-one on it is getting pretty rare..Hell, there is a raft of people making a living off flying round the world and following swells via internet reports and forecasting sites. While i am an ardent user of the technology i still am a little sad of the fact that it is rare that i wake up early some days and suddenly discover that the local break is 2-3 feet bigger than the forecast whereas before when i was a grom half of the magic was arriving at a break not knowing or expecting to see a wave and finding the waves pumping, or shooting the **** at a bar in bali where everyone was a swell guru and predicting the swell on the full moon etc....while it is great to be a local somewhere the more local you are the less experience/respect you have for other surfers which in turn becomes a catch 22 situation. A friend of mine who lives on a remote pacific island has a policy of paddling to every surfer in the lineup and shaking their hands, which he uses regardless of where he is surfing....maybe not such a good idea at Snapper Rocks but it does make a far more favorable lineup when when you acknowledge the existence of everyone else. Personally i find that most dickheads respond far better to praise than abuse..if you tell someone that continually paddles inside you that they are "tearing the balls out of it" they are more likely to slow down a bit and be a bit fairer...having said that if someone continually paddles inside me at prawnwall.......
" I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know my name is the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon thee."

News flash bro? Yeah well done champ, nice attempt at communicating with the grown ups! Yep, agreed weekends are a circus, early morning mid-week is your only option.

The winter here has been brilliant (by Perth standards) so no complaints really.

Not too sure about the term 'aggressive local' either, you'll probably find that most of the aggression and intolerance comes from the blow ins. But hey, what choice do we have, you either deal with it or stay out of the water. It's not like the crowds are going to get any smaller.

as a Mandurah resident I have to agree with Newey, things have changed since the freeway extension. The area is blessed with several banks but it seems that we still have crew rocking up and hitting the one with the most on it, I don't get it and seldom surf it these days. Localism is unavoidable, Perth crew coming down for a morning sesh is their right, we don't own it but maybe a surfcam that indicates how crowded it is might be a good thing, I didn't know it existed and most of the crew I've asked didn't know either. We just tell each other if the banks are OK or if a certain spot has started to work and hit it!

.I also think that people with massive egos are more prone to aggression both in and out of the water (see Sunny Garcia's exploits as an example). I have been surfing for around 30 years or so and have only seen aggression in the water by metro 'locals'. The most chilled out people are down south and as long as you show respect you will have a great time. The proviso, though, is that you shouldn't paddle out if you cant handle the conditions.

in the end we must remember that we are all 'blow ins' and that having the right postcode does not give you the right to hurl abuse at others. That is also a poor way of 'communicating with the adults'.

I am the first to admit that I hate crowded surf and I will often try and find a lesser break with fewer people on it. I'm too mellow a person to bother hassling for waves and as such I avoid those breaks. It means I don't get frustrated or disillusioned because after all I am out there to have fun, not to be aggressive or competitive.

That is just my perspective.

It's funny how the anonymity of internet chat forums actually brings out the sort of people I am talking about! No doubt, the crowds have steadily got worse, there will soon be 5000 new home sites in this area since 2003, but I don't think that is the main problem. It's the people of this world, like Ados and Suba, who bring their arrogance and intolerance that complicate things out in the lineup.

Surf was great today, alot of familiar faces, great banks and a good vibe. Dare I say it, looks good for the next few days too!

Here's hoping Suba can make it out the back ....

geez Newey that's a bit harsh, not sure how long you've been reading the forum but let me tell you that you're way off the mark. The guy's you've noted express their opinion in a pretty straightforward way, if you don't agree that's fine. This forum is pretty good, I personally enjoy the straight shooter approach and don't see it as arrogance.
