Good discussion on Epoxy...

Back on track;

Monkeyfish,
Merrick Glassing is great. I have quite a few of their boards. You can also go custom Merrick. I think they also have 5 ounce fibreglass cloth. 5-5-5 is a good balance of strength and weight. Regular glassing is 6-4-4. I like 5-5-5.

I have a POD in 4*4*4 and its far too light a glass job for me. It has lots of pressure dings and has had a few chunks replaced in a relatively short period of time. The bloke when I brought it advised me that it was pretty light and to be careful. So I can not fault them for their honestly. I got it cheap as it they had used the wrong colour filler in the fin plugs and because it was the TL glass job. The board goes unreal though and served a great purpose at the time so I hold no grudges. Infact the board still goes great and I will keep it till death do us part most probably.

polyester and sun cure...both sides laminated...fillers both sides...perfect mechanical bond all coats..ready for fin plugs...all before 10am.

epoxy...3 days...go figure....its tuff poo no doubt about it...but it just aint viable in my book...kudos to the guys doing good work with it though....and this thing about it being healthier...well I dont know about that either...there are guys that cant touch the stuff at all after using it for awhile....I have been using polyester for 40+ years and I'm fffine

with epoxy if you are switched on you can do pu 6' with 4, 5 deck 5 bottom with carbon tail patches all in one lay up ,start on the deck flip do the bottom ,only lap sand once on the deck ,rub all over by hand to rougth up for hot coat ,plug and sand the next day .two day job ,time to make start to finish 3 hours 20 .board weight under 2.4 kg . they do surf well .

sorry vgr...I dont understand...what do you mean "can do pu 6' with 4, 5 deck 5 bottom".(are you wearing a respirator)...and are you flipping them wet?...you would have to, to lam both sides and hot coat in a day...sounds very messy to me...is 2.4kgs over pu or eps? I got my last epoxy down to around that weight and I dont like it...it's too light cant feel the thing under my feet...what resin are you using?
cheers Ron.

Yep - but it was very very cheap at the time. I had a new custom made n they had shaved too much foam off from what i wanted (thought I asked for) so after 3 surfs n strugglying to paddle it I put the 4sale sign up n needed a replacement fast. The POD served the purpose. I made one phone call to the boys in Mona Vale n drove down n picked it up 2hrs later. A new replacement is now being sought for the original custom - with the correct amount of foam in it!

Hi Ron ,yes i do wear a respirator ,I dont sniff the product.
yes i do flip them wet have stands to sutethis style of glassing ,stoped using poly lams about 8 years ago .very clean if you are set up and tidy in your work ,all laps are cleaner and tigther than lap sanding between lamsl ,6 foot pu foam under 2.4 kg with 4/5 deck 5 bottom plus carbom tail patch ,done in eps 1.8 to 2.1 kg depend on foam ,
cost to lam a 6 foot board with 4/5 /5 is less than 14 dollars ,amount of product need is 600 to 700 grams of mixed ,wast is around 100 grams of drop off .
I use Kinetix epoxy ,tryed most and they all have some good points and bad ,kinetix has beed good for me over at least 8 years so if it ant broke dont fix it . on weight there is a point when they are to light ,2 .1 to 2.4 is the sweet spoot most at a high level . Leigh

so Leigh, I'm assuming by that..".600 to 700 gms mixed"...that you lam both sides with the one mix?...then obviously let dry and fair in the lap?...you dont hot coat both sides in one mix surely?....and while on the subject...how do you stop gassing when going over eps?...I have used Kinetix...at the moment using fgi 180...I think the Kinetix is far superior.

You know it! Hahah.

Vgr are you using poly filler coats or full epoxy.

For the record on weight, Mick Fanning has his boards weighed, it is written on the tails. His sweet spot is 2.25. Any lighter he will not ride, much heavier no go either.

That's an Ultra Lite blank, 4 x 4 diagonal glass sanded finish.

with eps and top and bottom lam in one mix, i leave the tip of the nose open for gas to escape till a point in time that i can still seal befor it gose of to much ,

fgi 180 is not uv stable ,

very little faring up is required when you lam over a wet lap .
this pic is of a wet lap on a 8'3" sup in 6 ozs cloth 2x6 1x6 bottom all done in one mix .Leigh

is that clear over blue Leigh? I cant see any lap at all...very impresive
cmc...I tried the pu hot coat over the kinetix...not very good...the pu yellowed very quick and the bond was not good either.
yeah Leigh the fgi has to be covered...been spraying them thats why I like the kinetix its like flouro white eh...supposed to glow under a black light....seing as your letting go of trade secretshow do you stop the lam from sticking to the racks...plastic?

yes, very good discussion - a lot more to glassing than I expected, so many options in PU alone

decided on the stock JS, the boards have a nice weight and balanced feel under arm, I havnt heard any bad reports on JS in general talk with people.

blue sealed eps with 6 ozs cloth and kinetix , you must get rid of any shine on your lam befor poly hot coat ,yellowing on poly ,epoxy lam very uv stable ,polly hot coat with more than 1% will yellow, all hot coats yellow to small drege just stands out more in deeper parts like laps and fin patches over epoxy .

If nothing else JS is a good businessman, so he's smart at making boards that last 'fairly' well and have good designs. I say 'fairly' because it's a balance of weight and strength. Not sure what you got, but the standard is 2 4 oz on the desk and a 4 oz on the bottom ... a fair all round glass job for the weight aimed at the 'consumer' average joe surfer ...

I live just down the road from where they are made, few mates have had them for years and they are happy with the longevity of the glass job. I've just got one, and it's ok.

More importantly, how does the board go?

I have found epoxy/styros can suit heavier guys like me because they are more buoyant and springy in small waves. I am not talking about tuflites either they are stiff bad flex.
. PUs seem to have more follow thru drive as epoxys are a bit more reactive in the turn but dont carry thru on cuttes as well...Lighter guys seem to go better on PUs as they get the follow thru..also epoxys can feel to bouyant..

I have a couple of lightweight epoxys with stringers not carbon rails which I like u still get that PU feel but lightweight with spring.

As soon as you get push in the waves or chop like down south PU all day long.
