kellys day at 8 foot pipe
"............into a completely original 5’11 with the wide point pushed forward, flatter, with a stubby nose, and slightly thicker and wider............This 5’11 x 18 1/2 x 2 1/2 round pin enabled Kelly to get into the hollow waves earlier and deeper allowing for adjustments that only a shorter board can provide. The Deep Six is the latest in Kelly’s quest to ride boards shorter than normally thought possible in surf conditions all over the world.......”

That board was more suitable for those waves, not less. Consensus was it sucked as an all round board, but perfect for late deep tubes. Wide point to get in early, pintail from a 6'10" or something for control once in.

Hey JHawaii,
I know what you mean about getting caught out with wrong board choice, and just making do with what you have under you, you sometimes are pleasantly suprised by how well the board handles it...especially the fish designs...(of which I am big fan)..but you got to agree there aint a better feeling than sliding into a bomb with your favourite big wave board under you (everything is so much easier)...and you have so much more time to get your take offs right....having said that...I was in the mentawaiis in june and I had an 8'2" a 6'10" and a 5'9" all quads and I rode the little fish heaps they are definatley a must have part of your quiver wherever ur going.

Hey Thommo,
Just because it has four fins doesnt mean it's got no soul, it's an 8'2" gun with solid paulonia rails,it's f#*king oozing soul mate, and yeah i bet your single fin is as well...thats the cool thing about surf design right now...people are riding all kinds of different things...it's great i think...it's even soulfull

no i`m not, i`d rather a board built by a person, i think manufactured boards are a supply and demand thing someone picked up on because of the increased interest in our sport....a few bucks to be made and maybe the contest scene, i mean real shapers (like yourself) would be in the shed 24/7 trying to keep up on the demand these days or am i wrong? anyways Ron you are a legend in my book keep up the good work.

thanks for the compliment Tommo,as long as there are surfers like yourself there will be shapers like myself filling there needs....you are right on the money...china is feeding the global popularity of our sport...driven by the fast buck...and we see it in everything now...no getting away from that...and computer shapes have been a godsend to the guys doing the big numbers...but its the computer thats enabled our works of art to be mass produced by someone who doesnt surf and that to me is kinda the last bastion..where does the design come from? it comes from feeling...its not scientific...its feeling...and only a surfer knows it...but I guess we digress...the question was "can a 7s superfish handle bigger sucky waves?" and I guess the answer is...maybe it can...but can your local shaper do you one as good?...he will eat a cup of foam dust the day he can't.
