agree that it is worth a shot given the low impact and ease of removal if it doesn't work or breaks up. i think the City of Albany might be exploring this option for the emu point end of middleton beach, to replicate the old kelp beds that used to be offshore there and had a surfable wave from them as well as reducing wave energy/erosion on the beach. haven't seen any design info though.

Would be great...but I think one of the commenters on the story make a good point about Perth's lack of fresh water. Then goes onto making a much better suggestion of building one in the Swan River. Look how much parking space they provide in the plan for artists impression of the Subi idea, looks like the typical parking space allocated for any public/private facility in that area...if they built one in the swan, they could let the wave flush out & have fresh water flow in to prevent stagnation. So you wouldn't have to worry about spending heaps on chlorinating such a huge body of water & you wouldn't have to keep topping up the water level with scheme water. Maybe put it down near the train station & incorporate it into that revitalization project they're got going already.

They'll probably end up throwing 20 people in at a time and let sort it out.. I.e - whoever is the deepest gets the wave. Would be a good idea to reinforce surf etiquette by banning people who drop in

But they will lose out (foot traffic + pubs) with no football and nothing to replace it. Most people that go to the Subi for the footy would never go there other wise.

Sounds good but I cant see it happening.

Subi council has recently taken steps to alleviate parking issues by cutting ties with Wilson parking, freeing up a fair bit of space. But there is no way the surf idea will be approved - especially with multi-storey apartments. Subi is far too conservative.

Subi has it's issues for local business and the footy ending is icing on the cake.

The residents' sentiment doesn't help. Eg. opposition to new small bars/restaurants and development generally.

That's because that tower broke a number of local planning rules and is totally out of character. It took Colin's idiot planning minister forcing them by changing the law and overruling/bulldozing Subiaco to allow it.

Perhaps but, local business desperately needs it. And Perth generally needs urban infill and higher density living (rather than sprawl).
