In my opinion if a longboard is catching rails then its most likely due to poor positioning on the board and/or the rocker being wrong. I guess it depends on what one classes as catching a rail. Personally in big surf I want a rail that grabs and holds (is that catching) or by catching do you guys mean "bogging" - if so its poor positioning and possibly the wrong type of board for the conditions. IMO of course.

Next:
Mctavishs are expensive boards for retailers to buy (at wholesale price) and there isn't a huge margin in them for the retailer. As for their standardish retail price - well historically Mctavish don't tolerate their boards being discounted by retailers and as such the RRP is pretty standard Aus wide. I would imagine this is so the sales direct from factory aren't unduly affected by a rogue discounting retailer and it also ensures integrity of the brand and its perceived retail value (fully agree with this)
Next:
Do you buy from a shop or the factory ? tough question, and really depends I guess on how well you know your retailer and how good of a deal you get from them with your trade-ins. Dukes was a bit of an exception I think because Warwick and Mike really really knew their shiz and were very thorough with their placement of orders with the various factories on behalf of customers. In all honesty I believe that their trade in prices were fair but about $150 short of what the boards were worth if sold privately, but having said that, many people who traded on a regular basis at dukes were just happy to have a fairly standard trade in price and as such a standard changeover on their new board. (mainly certain dudes who could afford to drop a few $ on their old board)
In the current climate I personally would buy my Mctavish direct from the factory and sell my old board privately if the factory offered shiz money for it. If I was ordering a Mct custom I would either visit or phone and spead to Ben McT about the custom also. I have no idea what their trade in prices are like - I'd imagine not nearly as high as when BB worked there but ya never know.
As for people considering custom orders from any other brand - never be afraid to ring or visit and ask to speak to the shaper. Many boards, both long and short are now machine shaped nowdays and IMO thats a good thing, so if you have some dream of having your idol shaper knock a board up for you, you should do a bit of homework and find out how much actual handshaping that persons actually does because if 95% or their boards are machine shaped then you may not be getting the absolute best product out of them by demanding a "hand shape" IMO
