Here's a couple of photos I took today from the 14th annual single fin comp at Burleigh Heads.

Occy came in third, Noah Lane second and a local first.Tough conditions with a massive sweep, wind and rain.
Sorry about the quailty, taken with my phone.

What incredibly disgusting conditions to hold a comp in.

You'd have to be very keen.

Hi obct, this comp is an institution up here held by the Burleigh Board Riders Club.
The week starts with a massive Friday lunch and the comp is run over two day's.
Parko,Fanning,Kong and some NRL stars have competed in this event to name a few.It gets good media coverage up here, but your right on the conditions. But there were some good waves, just didn't take any photos of the surfing just the paddle-out.

Hey great story thommo and yes its about single fins.Gee where doing ok staying on track.

Occy got smashed by the sweep on the way out,as soon as he did the jump off he copped a good set on the melon and washed him around the point on the wide side and low and behold a bigger set rolled and smashed him again, all in all I reckon he paddled for the first 10 mins before making it to the take off zone in a 30 min final.

Before the final all six finalist drank a beer before paddling out, such is the vibe of this comp.
I remember Col's boards they were the ducks nuts,Rabbit had a surf shop back then called,HOT STUFF which were similar to Col's boards, there were a couple around today.

Did Col Smith once make boards under the name "Morning Star", and sold them out of a shop on Dee Why Beach?

I decided to have a snoop around for myself, it looks as if he was associated with Morning Star surfboards????www.surfresearch.com.au/mm.html????By coincidence, Warner appear to be resurrecting the brand name and the old logo.????morningstarsurfboards.com/??????The reason I remember this insignificant little tidbit is because of an incident involving a mate back in about 73-74. His name was Keith and he was working as the glasser for a western suburbs manufacturer called Wakefield.????www.surfresearch.com.au/mw.html????They must have the date wrong in that link because this all happened way before 1976. Anyway, my mate had a falling out with the Wake (he hated being called "the wake") and set up a board shop of his own and called his boards "Morning Surfboards".????He lasted about 3 months in business before he was forced out of his premises by the council and after that he gave up the boards for ever. ????Then I remember him saying how Morning Star surfboards had started up and they pinched part of his name.????Even back then I though it was just a coincidence because his Morning surfboards were not really around for long enough for anyone to know about them and besides, most of his customers were down on the south coast.

Yes, I remember now, there were 2.

I seem to recall one of them died of lung cancer at a very early age.

I watched the late Col Smith out at Nobby's reef at Newcastle once on a sizey day. Bloody good surfer.
