Hey Sal, i went for a surf with a mate last week at Tallows, his first time back in the water there since being 1st on the scene to help that bloke who had his board shaken there a few years back. Surely a more snarky area.

They are everywhere, you'd hope these tragedies in WA are just anonmylies and it's not pointing to some problem with food supply. It sure is scary though.

Cook Island just of the Tweed Coast is a caf'e for great whites I s##t every time I do a Downwind Paddle out there thats why I always have a mate drive my jet ski when I'm in training for Maui.
Many years ago when I was surfing Mossle Bay in South Africa it was 6ft and pumping only 3 guys out I had a great white swim underneath me talk about walk on water I s##t.
Every time I surf Cloud Break in Fiji just before sunset I s##t just paddling back to the long boat as its open ocean with big tigers (Help Me Please Mr Wizard)

This is a theory from a friend of mine in the fishing industry who is regularly meeting with fisheries dept: reckons international fish stocks are down, over fishing. However local WA fish stock like pink snapper etc have never been better due to fishing restrictions imposed on professional fishos. So good feeding grounds for sharks. They are tagging and numbers locally (perth and sw) of sharks are really high......inevitable will be more attacks. Dunno what the solution is??

Just a gimmick.

Sure if a sharks snooping around and is a bit curious then yeah it would repel them, but chances are you have already seen it by then anyway.

But when you got a 6m pointer hammering towards you with just one thing on its mind, by the time it gets inside the working radius of the gadget to realise it doesnt like the sensation, there is nothing going to pull that thing up with the speed its coming in at.

Like they say, its the one you dont see that will get ya, and ya dont see them coz there fast

everything i've seen or read about whites pointers is they do indeed check you first in most cases

these arnt the guys who get eaten though

Mind you if my dive buddy was getting chewed on by a white pointer and I had the shark shield, I would die of a heart attack before I could swim over to him to be of any use.

I'm starting to reconsider surfing with you ever again

Don't sweat fellas help is near.

AUTHORITIES issued a catch-to-kill order to destroy a rogue shark just one hour after an American man was mauled to death while diving off Rottnest Island, Western Australia today

funny how they've decided to do that after a yank was taken.
Maybe we've had it all wrong for several years, its not the fishermen who have over fished it's the damn sharks, and now they're coming in for big game fishing. Meats meat

We've had a few sightings lately - last weekend a few of us were w/surfing off a local spot and there was a small group of birds hanging around one spot. As I cruised past I saw something hit the surface & make a decent splash (from experience, wasn't a dolphin, seal or whale - I know what they look like).

Anyways, the wind was too good to leave, and although I thought I should warn the others (had a strong feeling it was a noah), I didn't want to finish the day on the water by myself...for obvious reasons! Best I could come up with was telling the guys "hey, you see those birds circling over there...best to stay away from them, or at least try not to fall in near them". The birds hung around right where we were (attempting) gybing out the back.

When we were all out of the water I told them why...

The problem is EXACTLY the food supply.
Since Australia stopped whaling in the 80's the whale migration has got closer and closer to the shores. The big sharks (and orca's) follow the migration preying on the calves.
I can remember sitting at cape byron in the late 80's needing binoculars to spot whales at this time of year. Now, they're just about in the lineup with the surfers and the sharks are right behind them.

Yeah that would work , during the migration they could knock off a whale once a week and anchor it 2 km out to sea to keep the sharks away..........not.

Any one remeber Vic Hislop , he would be loving this.Hed be calling for open season , imagine if Great whites wheren,t protected you would have every redneck with a boat trying to get some jaws for a trophy.

More people die of bee stings , or crossing the road , or eating peanuts. )].Or drinking to much piss. Or rock fishing , the most dangerous sport around , apparantley.

old vic, i was reading one time where he reckons there's a cover up- missing people at sea are shark victims !!!!!.

i guess it a inbuilt fear for being eaten alive that makes a shark attack seem a lot worse than eating peanuts

Yeah every one has seen Jaws, Lol.I used to dive a lot and seen two sharks in the whole time.Seen one whilst surfing. What amazes me is divers go out of their way to look like seals , black wetties ect.I think most sea creatures know if it is brightly coloured it probably doesent taste good and is more than likely dangerous. Any way another good reason to sup , no dangly bits in the water , and a 6 ft stick to whack em with.

I think lawn bowls take the cake as the most dangerous sport, it has to have the highest death rate of participants surely...
