Long time lurker (and long time surfer) - have been mucking around on a 9'7" PSH Hull Paddler for a couple of years mainly on flat water (ie fair portions of summer in Perth), but have been catching waves for the past few months. Yes, I am now hooked and so took delivery of a 7'11" Carbon Evoke last week.
I certainly relied on opinions in this forum and loved your vid Whitey (yt04).
I was of course stamped urgent to have a crack and was straight down to the beach the following morning before work. I have to say it was a bit of a learning experience and struggled with stability compared to the PSH. Whilst I caught a couple of waves, I also managed to sprain my MCL stacking it.
My demographic is fairly similar to others here - wrong side of 40 and around 87kg. I am hoping that it is just practice/time in the water that is the answer. I am happy though to receive any tips or knowledge!
Cheers, Kerr-e
Kerr-e, welcome mate and congrats on joining the evoke club! Thanks for the plug for my vid.
Just keep with it mate as any new board will take a few rides to "find your feet". I still have my evoke (would love to upgrade to the new green but don't have the spare $$) and usually ride it on choppier days as I lashed out and bought an 8'vex that's keeping me busy and I've been mostly riding my 10' runway this summer. That's my 3 board quiver like has been mentioned.
When starting out in a new board try using the hybrid stance where your feet are still shoulder width apart but your front foot is forward with the heel on line with the right toes. Helps a lot with stability including front to back too. Hope I'm telling you to suck eggs but I still use it on choppier days.
Should take you no time for it all to click and you'll be away. Try staying closer to the break to and try some later take offs. They're pretty easy on the evoke and can regularly catch a wave with 2 paddles.
cheers Whitey (yt04)
