Argus I am 95kg and have ordered the 7'2 in carbon.

Don't feel alone, I also have a wait as I am from South Africa and my board is only due in November. So you may have your's before me, but ill report back anyways.
I expect it to be a bit of a challenge but I rode a 2014 8'5 x 29 106L Starboard Pro the other day and handled it just fine. The chop wasn't bad at all and I expect the Hypernut to be less stable but im looking forward to the challenge in the chop, and think the benefits of the 28" width on the wave will make the hard work worth it.

last week i had the chance to try the JP Slate Surf 7´2 x 28´´ 103 liters

I´m now 85 kg plus gear. I made a pre order of the hypernut Wood edition 7´x28´´ (by that time i was 75kg, hehehe)

I first test de jp first in flat wáter with no issues, float me fine (third rear of the board under wáter) but no problem at all to paddle. very stable, nice glide, not so much jaw and i have a pretty big paddle. Never fall.

A different beast on the ocean. 3 hours sesión in perfect conditions, glass, no wind, 4 foot beach break.

Only manage to catch 3 waves, the rest of the time i was falling. Sometimes i could stand still, sometimes paddling arround in the line up.

Only caugth 3 waves because lack of timing with this board, lack of stablility (my fault, not the board) bad position in the line up (to far out and not catching the wave or in the inside and the wave breaking over me or falling)

So, bottom line: although it is doable (need to start feeding with lettuce, cutting off the sweet and practice practice practice) i start wondering is a more bigger hypernut is not going to be more fun. (what is all about)

I was looking for performance in small waves, but realice that don´t want to loose the fun factor.

I remember someone here ask me why i didn´t go with the 7´4 x 30 if the 85 prowave was a struggle, and by that time i didn´t want to know about somthing wider than my hokua (28´´)

I will not eat my words (because i had to get in shape, hehehe)

Now, after this two sessión, i´m wondering if the 7´4 has much more stability than the 7´2 (as it only has one more liter) or even if the 7´8 performance is that much worse.

As i didn´t recibe my board yet, i think i had the chance to trade it.

Anyone rode the 7´2 vs the 7´4 vs the 7´8 to give me a feed back?

We don´t get "perfect conditions" often. So i think the 7´8 will do the job in wathever the ocean throw to me. (i will keep the hokua 9´5 btw)

i´m an addict. all my life i have been "the fat guy" (110 kg)

on the 27 of january 2014 i did a protein diet and loose 35 kg in tree months, when i left the diet , i start eating a lot again (sweet and flour, eating at night and old bad habits), gaining weigth, loosing weigth, trying to find the "rigth spot"


in december of 2014 i was 80kg, after the summer and until now 5kg more.

I´m in focus again, protein and veggies, no sugar, no flour. Not the "hard" diet, just eating fine again.

I just ordered my 7'8 lets see what all the fuss is about shall we :)

Hey gregc, how is the weight difference? You have the carbon airborn right? I have that board as well but a little lighter than you and still happy with the starby but always looking around :)

I just spent this morning really getting a feel for the HyperNut, I had an awful first surf on it last week and wanted to have another crack on it. So off to the coast I went and had the best morning surfing I have had in quite a while.

All the stuff they say (when you get one dialled in) is correct, they are stable (for the volume) the things that do need to be really dialled back in are all the 'sight picture' stuff i.e. where you stand to actually catch a wave, how hard you paddle to get into a wave etc.

The truthfully beautiful thing about these boards is just the convenience of the shorter length and how they git into such small spaces (cars, lifts etc).

I am stoked with he purchase and I will be putting my Airborne up for sale in the next day or so :)

Hi Greg, interesting reading of your experiences with the Hyper. Just wondering how it compares with your Airborne re stability, glide, ease of use etc? I have an 8 8 Airborne & find it an almost perfect blend of stability, surfing performance & glide, but am very curious re the Hypernuts. Cheers, LT

I know a quite a few heavier blokes are wondering about the stability of the the 7'2 Hyper Nut. Well I received my board 2 weeks ago so thought I owed a small review.

For reference I am 95kg and started supping at the beginning of the year. I have no previous surfing experience but used to do lifesaving when I was younger so am at least confident in the ocean. My first board was a 9'0 x 33" 160L Coreban Bomb which was great as a starter board but quickly outgrew it. Since then I have been on an 8'6 x 31 130L Coreban Platinum+. Although similar in volume to the Starboard Pocket Rocket (which I found really comfortable) I initially battled a lot with the Platinum+ as it has a much more pointy surf nose, and had to work out the stepping back whilst paddling for a wave to prevent pearling. In the beginning I thought I would never get used to the Platinum+, but now I often take it out in conditions even boogie boarders won't go in and feel comfortable. Recently I tried out a 2014 8'5 x 29 106L Starboard Pro. This board to me felt almost as stable as my Platinum+, even though it has a lot less volume. Of all the boards I have tried Starboard seem to have some magic going on when it comes to stability for their relative size. On the Pro it felt like I had a larger sweet spot forwards and back than my Platinum+, but obviously more tippy side to side with the 2" less width and less volume.

So obviously the main reason for going for the 7'2 Hyper Nut at my weight is wave performance. Before deciding on the Hyper Nut I was going to get a smaller regular shaped surf sup in the 7'11 size range. The design of the Hyper Nut appealed to me though, and the reviews helped sway the decision as well. I was mostly pleased to get rid of the pointy nose that I never felt did much but steal volume away from areas that would benefit from it more.

As luck would have it the conditions were terrible the day I got my board. No swell, just wind chop from a blasting NE the whole day. I could have gone to test the board out in the river, but thought I would try my luck in the sea instead. Well on the up side at least I was the only soul on the beach that afternoon because I must have fallen off 50+ times in the hour I was in the water. I knew the board was going to be hard to stand on but I honestly did not expect it to be that hard. There was so much chop and ground swell movement I could not stop the board from sinking the nose, the back, the rails....

This was great practice for the following day however. Conditions were a lot better than the previous day, but still not very good as the other guys I sup with were complaining about stability, and they were on their regular boards. At least this day I could paddle a bit before falling off. Waves were hard to catch as they were breaking all over the place so I had to chase the peaks. On a short wobbly board like this not an easy task at first, but after around half an hour I caught my first wave (around 3 ft). This wave caught me by surprise and I landed up taking a very steep drop, straight into a bottom turn. I was surprised that the nose did not even come close to catching as this had been one of my concerns. Admittedly with the surprise of catching the wave I did not get back as far as I should have but the board still made a quick bottom turn. After the first wave things kinda clicked and I caught about 5 more before getting out. These waves were not good enough to give a proper review on wave performance, and I do not sup good enough to push the board either but what I can say is that what all the other reviewers have been saying about on wave performance is correct. I most definitely felt the little pop of the back of the board when it scoots you onto a wave, and when I got my foot right to the back on the stomp pad I found the board still kept it's speed well without bogging down and just carved so quick. So far I am very impressed with it's wave performance and can't wait to get it out on decent days of 4' or 5' so I can really lean into some turns. I must admit that I like big fins on my boards. On my Platinum+ I run GL1 Quad fins and so was expecting to slide out on the Hyper Nut. However this was not the case and the supplied fins felt great in that I did not notice them at all. Maybe I have improved a bit and am engaging more rail, and maybe the waves that day did not have enough power. Time will tell.

Unfortunately those are the only chances I have had to use the sup in the ocean as we are in our windy season and the sea has been a mess. Has been pretty good for downwinding on the other hand though. I have taken it 3 times into the river just for some practice and to make sure I'm standing in the best position etc. With my 95kg in the best spot on the board I have my feet just about level with the water, the nose is out about an inch out and the back is under so that even the kick pad stopper block is under water. I stand in a staggered stance when paddling, but need to slide my back foot even further back when paddling for a wave or the board will pearl. Overall I am going to say that the 7'2 Hyper Nut is stable for it's length but if you are coming from a 130L + board be prepared for a surprise. Also these short boards really do paddle slow, but at least with less volume there is less pull on the leash when getting pounded on a sand bank trying to get out!

I weighed my board and it came out at 7.4kg with fins. This may seem a little heavy for a carbon board of this size but I am so impressed with how solid this board feels. Squeezing around the board with my thumbs shows no soft spots, unlike the 2014 Pro that was lighter but soft and dented all over. I was also a little unsure of the colours when I first saw pictures of the Hyper Nut, especially the red stripe as it looked a bit gaudy. Well I can tell you in person this board is a looker, and even my girlfriend commented on how nice it looks.

If given the opportunity to buy again I would still purchase this board. I actually enjoy a challenge and was starting to become stagnant supping my other board. I have also not been able to stop thinking of the fun I had on the waves, and am dying to get out there again. I could feel rapid progress and will update my review when I have had more time on the board.

Have been Supping around 24 months now, Had a selection of boards ( a few planks) and now some slightly newer ones which includes my current ride, a Coreban Fusion (9ft).
I've been progressive in reducing the size of my boards as I learn but have as yet never found that board that "does exactly what I wanted".
What is it that you want? I hear you say......
What I want is a board that drops in predictively, is stable but short so turns are easier (I'm no expert) and is generally fun and alive, similar in a way to the feeling I get from a Kiteboard/wakeboard/snowboard.
I've just felt, that while I'm loving my Sup surfing, there should be more reward for my efforts...

Well, I spent the last few days down in Merimbula at the festival which was amazing, but crucially, there were the Starboard boys with all their wares out on show.. So, between disturbing him (sorry mate) from eating bacon rolls and talking to proper surfers, I managed to grab Marco for a bit (ok a lot) of his time to talk to me about the kooky looking HyperNut, and specifically the 7'8. He told me this that and the other and I tried to make it seem like I knew what a, he was talking about and b, I knew what I was doing and after all that I just said balls to it and asked if I could have a little go! This with the intention to have a crack at a few waves, realise I'm dreaming that I (at 45 and 84KG) could ride a 7'8" board at all and to bring it back 15 minutes later asking for the 8'.

Well ****, if I wasn't out on that little beauty for a good 2 hours! I'm amazed they didn't get the loud hailer out to call me back in..

What can I say, the board is amazing, really awesome, super stable (was pretty glassy) and rode like a dream, mainly a 2-3 foot left was my order of the day.. I pulled more turns in that 2 hour session than I have all year on my other rides, its quick down the face, it turns in the bottom well, it drops and climbs so so easily and most importantly it forgives a fat middle aged ex waterskiiers ham fisted riding style and just makes me smile, the kind of smile only a truly happy person can get, you know the smile right?...

I ride mainly, OG, 13th, Posso's, a bit of Front Beach and Roadknight too, you know the drill... And I just see how this little stunner makes so much sense. You get to use that short riding dumpy shore break and have more time to get some turns in to have some fun because its so quick and nimble...

I came off the water, gushed at Marco how amazing it was and ordered one pretty much on the spot! I'll be picking it up from ZU Friday as long as the boys put enough stamps on the parcel....

I now cant wait to get out and rip this weekend, I'll be there, Posso's on the 7'8" Electric....... come say hi (if you're not a log rider that is!) ....

Thanks to the Starboard boys for putting up with my many questions, I was never made to feel like the goon I am talking to them and that's why my next board will also be a Starboard... Its all about the journey right? Life's short.....

Hi Guys. I just ordered mine (HN 8') in wood after long hesitating in Carbon. I did not have a chance to try but after reading all these posts I felt comfortable in my decision. Still I read this is a super stable board I went for the 8' for extra-stability. My current board is a pocket rocket 130 L 8'5 super in glassy small waves but less fun in chops at 90-95 kg, 6 ft. I believe 7'8 would have been similar in stability to my PR. I have to wait now 4 months to get in Europe...

I know they are many brands but so far the best SUPs I have tried are the SB & JP, especially for stability

I was looking for something that can turn like my PR but more stable. I bet I made the right decision :-)
