yup, I see the current GL tail wing is mounted on top with screws and this new tail with a wing tip is mounted under and it's like GF reverse the pedestal upside down and mounted the new wing tip and screws under. So progressive this foil sport and it's like if you blink you missed out. I hope the current pedestal is compatible with that wingtip and just turn the pedestal upsidedown to accommodate this new wing?
I'm going to the tip and tip toe around it

One thing I've noticed with the pedestal tail is that it seems to breech in turns sooner than the older V tails. Pretty sure it's not the front wing breeching, totally different feel. Took some getting used to though now it's no problem. If this pic is correct having the tail wing on the underside of the pedestal would give back some of that mast length.

I assumed the new pedastal tail is designed for downwinding and to be more efficient, not for surfing particularly. No issues with breaching on a downwinder. I still use the old tail for surfing but assume the new tail pictured above is the new tail made for surfing.

that's interesting, GF testing out wing tip both top and bottom mounts with pedestal. So now we have a flat tail and soon to be release wing tip. Just hope the pedestal is compatible with both top and bottom mount and you can also flip the flat tail for top or bottom mount. I'm no aero geek but what is the deal with these wing tail of flat compared to wing tip?

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wingtip_device

In short, reduces drag created by wingtip vortices.
Almost all winglets on airplane wings point up, i.e. in the same direction as the convex side of the airfoil. Interestingly these point in the opposite direction, also pointing up but the convex side is on the bottom of the tail wing. At the speeds we're travelling I'm skeptical.

In general I like the flat tail wing better than the Maliko tail which tended to dance around through chop. The flat tail wing actually tracks better (I have the wide version, haven't tried the narrow). I'd certainly try the winglet version but would like to see those winglets pointing downwards.

The most interesting thing about that pic is where the mast is mounted to the board, this just looks right.

They probably just put them on for a bit of yaw control..the stab looks pretty short, so it might add a nicer locked feel for the surf.

looking at it closer, we might need to buy also another pedestal for the coming wing tip tail. I see almost every brand now has wingtip, either flat with wing-tip or bend with a wingtip.

Wing tips...a friend in the biz says they are added for safety rather than performance. Eg if you fall on a sharp tipped high aspect wing it might be like a samurai sword through your guts. He was referring to slingshot with this comment but may apply to gofoil too? Especially with their marketing of no sharp edges, no metal, rounded carbon for safest out there etc

Anyone has the size area of the GL : It would interesting to compare GL140, 180, 210, 240 to Axis 900, 1000 and Unifoil/Signature 175, 190, 210, 250

all I know is (thanks to Piros measuring the gofoil GLs) that the signature/unifoil 210 is nigh on identical in terms of width and chord to the GoFoil GL180.... not the GL210 as the names might suggest.

Winglets are a complicated topic. I dusted off my Fundamentals of Flight textbook from Engineering school and found this (below).

Winglets save ~1% on efficiency but allow airplanes to have shorter wings so they DON'T bump into eachother at Airports.
Wikipedia hints at this: "e.g., available width at airport gates"

Not a very sexy reason. And NO reason we should have winglets on our hyrdofoils.

Those tips on the tail are acting like rudders stabilizing YAW. Not sure I want that.

Not much of a tech guy...my eyes glaze over once the gang gets into the aeronautic tech tech. I could be a caveman luddite but at our speeds, not sure how much of that science applies....wingtips at 500mph vs 10mph may be significant.

But back to my post above....the reason I was told is safety. In a surf wipeout there is a reasonable chance of falling on the wing sideways (if board folds towards you). A sharp wingtip would be like a sword. A turned down tip is less likely to pierce. Could it be as simple as that?

No but this is all there is , the Gofoil website has not been updated for some years..
And how can the projected surface of the GL210 be bigger then the actual surface?

Hey guys.
There has been a change of ownership of GoFoil in Australia and we are working hard to get everything updated along with fulfill all the current orders. There will be a new GF Aus site shortly with all the updated pics & information you'll need.
cheers Dyl

At least in my eyes the whole GoFoil naming scheme is just confusing along with the lack of technical measurement. This is why I don't even consider this foil.

The chord measurement on the Albatross 210 can't be 40.2mm and is probably longer than 140.2mm if the aspect ratio is correct.
There a number of impossible measurements on that chart.

what's the weight on the latest 1.5 29.5 mast/fuselage because the gofoil Australian site said 40% lighter?
Also, gofoil Australian you need to add the new gl tail in the menu - foils - gl series
nice move Kite Republic and looking forward to some gofoil demo someday

I own a KAI GL100 and GL140 and would love to know the surface are of all the GL range. GOFOIL should be happy to release this information as it helps when coming from other brands and trying to choose. The website updates still exclude dimensions including the areas.

Am loving the GL140 for prone.

A GL120 would be awesome.

Nothing like Answering a question with numbers and pictures: Tall Mast Fuselage = 5 lbs, 2 oz. --> 2.3 KG

Total Rig 8 lbs 11 oz --> 3.9 KG. Other parts shown (Kai ~ same as GL Tail).
