The Poms rave about the Standard Horizon range. It has the extra US channels but all the international frequencies are the same as the allocated Australian ones. I wont be getting a license.

Looking at and comparing the Simrad with the Lowrance it appears to me that they are the same radio with maybe some slight internal variations. Both Simrad and Lowrance are owned by Navico.

If you only have receive capacity then you do not need to register for a MMSI number as you would not be outputting data.

This was copied from and information web site regarding AIS (and is only part of the text)

The regulation requires AIS to be fitted aboard all ships of 300 gross tonnage and upwards engaged on international voyages, cargo ships of 500 gross tonnage and upwards not engaged on international voyages and all passenger ships irrespective of size. The requirement became effective for all ships by 31 December 2004.Ships fitted with AIS shall maintain AIS in operation at all times except where international agreements, rules or standards provide for the protection of navigational information.


The above is Class A AIS.

Class B AIS is for private and pleasure craft and is quite a bit cheaper and may be switched on or off at the discretion of the skipper.


Receive only is good if you just want to see other traffic but if you have send and receive it means the ships can also see you.

For receive only you can also download the app from www.marinetraffic.com and as long as you have a smartphone and internet access/phone coverage you can see the ships that way.

I have used the app on the water and think it's great even though we dont have a great deal of'shipping along the coast where I live. It will of course also show up ferry traffic as they fall under the heading of passenfer ships.

Don't think that just because you have a class B transponder you will be seen.

I have heard that large ships quite often turn off the class B receiver because of the clutter

Is it any need for class "B" transmitter, if large ships don't care,
you have to give then way anyway.
Perhaps with the other class "B" you can shake hands.
That's what it is for ?

I have had the earlier model Gx2150b for three years now. I bought it from Hodges marine in the US, paying the extra for the command mic. To date, despite all the offshore sailing I do out of Newcastle - the busiest coal port in the world - I have not connected it to a chart plotter, so have never used the AIS (Might do so sooner or later! It could be very handy?). Oh, the AIS will not work until it is connected to an external GPS.

In all, the Standard Horizon is not a bad unit for the price. The VHF works fine, though for some of the remote locations I end up in, to recieve weaker signals clearer, I do regret not going all out and buying the top of the shelf Icom 604. Icom also make a 506 with AIS. If you are on a budget and just want the convenience of recieving commercial shiping positions and using the information like radar with warnings etc, the Standard Horizon is a good buy.

Either way, the Ram Second Station/Command Mic is something I highly recommend. Sailing, it is so much easier to have this at the helm and the main unit protected in the cabin. With the Standard Horizon Ram Station, make sure you keep Inox or similar up to the bulkhead connection. Mine corroded and the main unit started turning itself on and off at random. Since giving it a regular spray, I have never had a problem.

I have purchased a couple of times now from Hodges without a problem and fast delivery. Their prices are excellent. To maximise value, with the more expensive US postage, it is worth buying a couple of things under the $1,000 import duty threshold. It is no problem to read the instructions for the Standard Horizon and change the channels from US to International. The Icoms do the same.

I got the Standard Horizon Matrix AIS GX2150 VHF from The GPS store in the States last month - was here in a week & good to deal with.

It is hooked up to my chartplotter via NMEA & everything works fine.

I'm convinced, this is the way i am going.
Rather than have an add on to my already dated chart plotter i get a backup VHF, GPS and AIS included. All I want is an alarm if anything is within a few miles and heading at me.
