I have a sail chute, But with out a mast, Its not going to do any thing except lay on the ocean,
Who carries a spare mast, Thats being rediculous, I also carry enough fuel to go 750 Miles,

For those of you who carry deflated inflatables on deck what do you use to inflate them
quickly in the event of an emergency ??.

Sam, I carry a 2.3m dingy deflated on the deck. It takes me about 15mins to inflate it with my 2 stage foot pump,, so it slow, so I don't consider it to be an emergency life raft unless of course the emergency was unfolding at a slow pace. I haven't been tested with that one yet. I do consider it to be dangerous to carry it already inflated on the deck because my boat is small and it gets in the way.

does anyone have the 12v DC air pumps? how fast are they?

Hi Steve Ive got two from Target that they sell for inflating airbeds. A "Main one" which we use all the time. It inflates all four sides of the IRB to hard in about 10 minutes. Then the other is a spare wrapped in bubble wrap in the aft cabin, its a bit slower maybe 20 min and even flat out the sides are a bit soft. But the theory is being in IRB with soft sides is better than being shark bait :-)

Ive got a two stage 12 volt pump which does my inflatable in around 5 mins, id say less in an emergency cause as soon as it Could float i would be in it lol

The mast came down on the top of us while racing on Pittwater few years back in about 18 knots wind.
It was easy, no danger to man or beast

but in higher winds,

It would have been more sordid.
Certainly there was no danger of putting a hole into the hull. It did not want to take off or sink us or anything like that, but in a gale, l would not be so cock sure it would not try doing some destruction.
So, it would have to be secured or cut away, which l would not like to do. The boat on the foto could be easily jury rigged unlike the lavranos.

As far as dinghy towing, it is a strict nono to me. Even for a day sail. I always cringe when l see one. Inflatables, double so. With a motor on it, triple so. Period.

I got one, when l don't use the kayak, l always deflate it for storage. Period. It is not a deck cargo as far as l see it. Not on a 28 footer anyway.

As the use of an inflatable as a life raft, l don't think so. It sounds like desperation.
If l was going ocean Xing l would suffer the cost of a proper solas life raft.
