You'd honestly would have thought the council would clean the beach if they took this event seriously?

C'mon mate, do you really think its acceptable for your council to hold a beach based event (which brings in the all important tourist dollar) and have that much weed built up? I understand how weed builds up (i nearly lost a bar and lines to it last week) but do you honestly think it looks like an inviting beach? Sure its a pain in the arse clearing it but it gives a few blokes a few hours overtime each morning of the event and shows your beach in its best light.

I fished Trigg reef almost every day for 2 years and every morning during summer the tractor graded Trigg and Scarborough beach in the dark... i bet the same happens at Bondi, cott etc and we all know why.

Most of the beach was weed free where most people were parked up both days - yes the place in front of surf club had weed washed up - big deal - no weed in the water - was a great setup with the new turf laid. I had the privilege to have this spot to myself , my mate and Cauncy on Saturday after the big air comp in 30+ kts until sunset- that place is awesome - great job to Waksa- this year was awesome - hope they have it on next year.

That's because they have to clean up all the needles , before someone sues the council for getting HIV desease.

not o problem when you live in Dongara.

A complaint was made last year about the removal of seaweed from an environmental side of things, seaweed has an important role to play in the health of our oceans( especially fish populations) , maybe that's why I released. 6 of these suckers after my last trip out

Nice little session as the sun was setting, doesn't get better wind wise than that , from what I saw everyone looked like they were having a decent time, a bit more swell would of been great, also thanks to all the crew for respecting our local beach, I always do a run in the ute to pick up any cans bottles or rubbish , the wasn't any cheers

Nice Dhuie

What role does it have building up on the beach and will removing it for 1 week affect the marine environment. Or was it a local who doesn't want their town ruined. Serious questions.

My way of looking at is simple. You have a world class kiting destination with a clean ocean (as can be seen in pics), new facilities and grass for kiters, their families and tourists to enjoy. Between that is a significant amount of weed built up.

I may be miserable **** or a dickhead but you add a clean beach (it doesn't have to resemble whitehaven of course) and for that bit of extra effort you have an internationally appealing kite event.

There is always some weed build up at the northern end, near the club house, but then miles and miles of fresh clean beaches...just look a little south where the cars are parked...no weed Man.

You Been there before?

Never kited but i've stayed in Dongara before.

Yeh the southern end looks great but if you're putting on a big event, why not make the whole beach stand out so punters who are paying go wow. It's hardly a new concept

The other 362 days of the year it can go back to normal.

The weed breeds worms and maggots which get washed out on the high tides when there's swell. Then the whiting and herring feed on them (which is why herring go crazy for maggots if you use them for bait incase anyone was curious.) More small fish=more big fish.

Mate clearing the weed in front of the clubhouse wouldn't have mattered as none of the spectators would have sat/stood down past the dunes/end of the grassed area as the sand on the beach was blinding, everyone was watching from the grassed area/car park or further down south on the beach parked in cars. In front of the club was for comps anyways & everyone launched a little further down the beach where no weed was. Trust me - all the punters watching were going wow - especially during the Freestyle & Big Air comps

the entire beach was weed free south of the slsc shed. if you have any clue about how wind and waves work the northern end of the beach will .....

actually never mind there is no point trying to explain it to you

DJMWA is spot on - and cauncy's pic speaks for itself
it would have been NACC that put a bit of a focus on retaining seagrass wrack on beaches a couple of years back

if you are genuinely curious MDSXR6T, here is one of their fact sheets:
http://www.nacc.com.au/sites/nacc.com.au/files/1090/pdf/Beach_wrack_information_sheet.pdf

i get your point MDSXR6T, but part of the campaign by NACC is to get people to start to embrace it as a natural part of the cycle of life of the ecosystem in those parts (and others), and not let minor inconveniences be a cause for altering it. i agree with them.

You have so much anger!

You can clearly see the beach is clean at the southern end in the photo's but it's completely irrelevant as the people aren't watching and photographing a comp at that end are they? Doesn't WAKSA need great media exposure (a picture says a thousand words remember) so new kiters actually want to join and participate in their events?

Everyone loved the new lawn right? Why was that do you think? Maybe because its appealing to look at and enjoyable to use?

A beach with seaweed piled 2 foot isn't.

That photo is of the big air comp at the end of the day. Everyone had packed up and gone to the club to watch / parked their car on the beach to watch or gone home to get ready for the party.... where some sweet Axis kite boards were given away during a giant game of heads and tails and a treasure hunt!

Whilst closing up the the surf life saving club i thought it would be a good idea to do a quick litter sweep of the beach, the beach was deserted, i drove about 3k up the beach. I was amazed, all I could find is one empty 500ml water bottle........ kite surfers rock!

(Yawn) it's a great event, just stay focussed on what the event is about. Relationship.
The seaweed has one with the beach.

I went to the beach once and it was covered in sand! I went straight to the council to complain. It's just not acceptable to go to the beach and have seaweed and sand just lying all over the place.

Please read the article posted by mazdon on beach wrack. It explains pretty well whY we leave weed on the beach in the Midwest and don't clear it. Thanks.
