hey ... i have only been kiteing for 10 months but in that time ,have taught myself to set my line up wind ,down wind and cross wind on each side ,this has been done to suit different beaches and conditions, i thought this was standard practice...

... yep, it should be practiced from all directions, what happens when you visit a new spot and the location dictates that you have to do your opposite!

what i really hate is to see people leave their lines attached to their kites, worst idea ever.

It helps you steer the kite...
But seriously, what do you mean? Like when the kite is parked on the beach, or you mean when they pack it up?

LOL!
there are some idiots out there that teach people to leave their lines attached to the kite when packing up and then just self launch...... accident waiting to happen IMO. and how the hell are you supposed to untwist the lines after lots of loops?!

upwind / downwind it all works out, its a good idea to roll your lines when your leaving the kite on the beach for extended time. be very careful not to put the lines through each other and use the elastic to hold them on the bar.

i think i might try downwind rig up next time and see what im missing ;)

Its a safety launching issue too (mainly for nubies)

Lines down wind- safer nubie walks round to bring kite into power zone..

Lines up wind nubie ends being dragged down wind as kite rised in power zone ....

Semantics:

If you rig a kite upwind (bar and lines upwind of kite), you walk the lines downwind.

If you rig a kite downwind (bar and lines downwind of kite) you walk the lines upwind.

Upwind rigging is really bad for the launcher guy.
The launcher is the guy holding the kite in the 'C' position.
The launchee is the guy holding the control-bar.
It's bad for the launcher cause the strings always get caught around your ankles when you go to pick up the kite.

I dont think it matters....but I swear im the only person in the NT who runs their lines Downwind. We do have all the space in the world though.

The logical way to set up your lines is by attaching them to the kite.

Kite should be in the clearest area not to damage it on self launch.

upwind, down wind, cross wind its all the same, just depends on the launch area in relation to the wind direction, dont see what all the fuss is about

I think that if you stick to one way its more than likely because thats all you know and are too scared to try anything different

I find it hard to belive that there is one way that best suits all conditions and launch area setups.

Upwind, downwind, cross wind, doesn't matter.

How about when your sitting on the beach having a brake you just roll your lines up so their not spread over the beach. Free's up more space then setting up crosswind and keeps people from standing on them.
