Look everyone makes good points, even our resident kneeboarder who does by the way know these waters as well as anyone. I've always hoped he would take up kiting one day.
As per usual the truth lies somewhere in the grey middle area.
In the end and in this order of priority for me:
1. thank fck Malcolm was okay in the end.
2. Be good to know exactly what happened so we can try and avoid such a situation as this in the future. That ultimately is the purpose behind my excessive rants.
All I do know is, the guys I kite with (my best mates with a brother chucked in there for good measure) always have my back and visa versa on the water and on land. There is no way in hell I would be allowed to go 'missing' like that.
Look out for each other crew, its a small community and we all have to make sure each other stays as safe as possible (but not too safe or it could get very boring

).
