Yeah why is that?

I doubt they are being considerate
It could be that it makes less noise or is less obvious to potential witnesses.
But from all reports most of the little F*#$rs dont care who is around.

1) Take a Jim Beam or Jack Daniels bottle that is almost empty perhaps a third left ( I know this may be hard to part with for some but it is important that there is still some left for the cover up )

2) Fill the remainder with urine, cold tea mixed with laxitive powder or anything else which will cause some discomfort ( please note you could go to the extreme and mildly poison the bottle and as you did not give it to them you may have a defense)

3) Leave it on the front seat or floor each time you go for a kite.

If they do break into you car to steal stuff 9 times out of 10 I would say they will steal the bottle too ( particularly if it looks full )
As said it wont stop them breaking in but at least when you come back to your car to see the window is smashed and things have been stolen you can draw some comfort some notion of revenge when you see the bottle is also missing.
It may make that cold wind buffeted ride home just a little more bareable.

wouldn't this just provoke them?

It might !

But they already smash cars, slash seats and steal anything not bolted down. If they do get confronted 99% of the time they run away.
Calling the police might provoke them !

Trying to stop them might provoke them !

Tying their hands together with your kite lines then attaching your bar to the tow ball whilst exiting the car park might provoke them !

If someone smashes my car window I will be more than happy to provoke them !

sometimes makes you wonder if chopping someones hands off when they got caught stealing was that bad after all. It certainly would make you think twice about it... another plus: no repeat offenders.

I am also thinking if drowning your wife if she cheats on you should be brought back in... ;-)

I'm adding it to the main post with a little addition of my own.

2) "Alternative" to urine or laxative is adding a nasty yellowish brown dye that wont come off the skin and something nasty and alcohol based like methylated spirits so they end up in hospital with a bloody painful tummy but dont die. Let the police know to put a post out for someone with their mouthed dyed the brownish colour in the hospitals and they'll be caught.

Being a victim on a fair few breakins I now have made a large flat toolbox bolted down in the rear of my car that holds boards kites ect.
This is locked through a latch, everything in my car that is of any value goes in here.
The thing is but also in the box is a 12 volt old car battery that has wires running to the underside of the latch, if you try to lift the latch you make contact with both of these naked wires and I can tell you it gives one hell of a boot and scorches the fingers.
In the top corner of the box hidden is a isolation switch well hidden.
Fry the S.O.B. yeah he may slash seats and stuff but he has already smashed the window to get in and with a good insurance policy if he does over $800 damage I can claim.
SO FELLOW WATERARIANS CHARGE UP may not catch them but gives a small amount of satisfaction.

Hi. Vandals ruined the driver's side door lock at Leighton last week. They didnt get into the car but it cost $150 to repair. Before going out I am considering putting a simple paper sign on my windows that reads

NO VALUABLES OR CASH LEFT IN CAR

The same kind of approach that shop owners use. I wonder how it would go. I'm not a big fan of leaving the doors unlocked as you might be that 1 in 100 cars that get stolen because of easy entry

Last summer we had a spate of little s#!+s stealing kite bags off the beach down on South Coast NSW. A few bags had car keys in them and they worked out which car it was and took off with the whole lot(Not a lot to choose from). Take your key with you.

PS The boys in blue caught them -

Yeah, Woodies is bad for that.

Spent 3 months in Oz, didn't kite in Perth once because of the thieves. Saw too much broken glass in the car parks. My sis goes to Woodies after I leave, bam, suitcase, laptop, cellphone gone. While our friends were just a few cars away.

When you're traveling, it's not really possible to not have your stuff in your car - can't leave it in the hostels for the same reason.

Solutions?

I tell you, since this incident I really check out the people who come and go. Was out all alone today, plenty of fishos and some walkers.

Hiding keys on the car is dodgy. Even if you were not staked out, which I think you were (because I say the fellas parked and checking out "the scene"), then these scum learn that many hide their keys on the car.

Leave nothing you can not afford to lose in the car, sad but safest and either have your keys on you, or on the beach where you can spot anyone approaching your stuff.

Unfortunately there is a bit of a cleptomanic culter here. Things are getting better though. I have seen some improvement in 10 years, but not much in the last 100 I'm afraid.

Recon if we all take photos of "suspicious" looking cars and characters hanging around, then next time something happens we give the police some investigative work to do.

Today I wrote down the number plate of some dudes....

Have any of you guys ever used the 'Brick Proof' window tint.

Touch wood - but ive always had it put on my windows and never had a breakin. Although - i havent seen any brick scratches either.

Im really just wondering if it works.

Cheers.

I've had the worst luck with car break-ins. Mainly Leighton. Back when i was stupid and thought leaving stuff in my car would keep it safe, i left all my camera equipment along with a bag full of my Assignments and Negatives blah blah (photography student).. The whole lot gone, stolen from my 1984 beat-up Nissan Pulsar that screamed "my owner does not have a lot of shiney 'spensive stuff!". Did score a nice New Nikon out of the insurance money though!

Itemised home contents insurance is a must-have!

Second time i got smart and left nothing in my car but a bag with a few neccessities and cosmetics in it. This was four days after i'd bought my new car, a 2001 Mazda 323. Returned to a smashed 1/4 window and everything gone! even the bloody car manual! perhaps because it was in a nice leather bound case, perhaps just because they wanted to make things difficult for me.

Next time i was with my sister's 2005 Peugeot 206. This car does not have 1/4 windows, so they stuck their screwdriver in the passenger side window and had fun making a mess out of the door frame. Took a bag which was later found in the north freo surf club's toilets all ripped up.

Point i'm trying to make? i dont think it really matters what car you've got. If they feel like it, they'll break into it. If You're really attached to something that probably has no value to the theif, check around the area to see if they have dumped it.

Why do they smash 1/4 windows? i think because it's easy and it doesnt make much noise or draw much attention. it's nice and easy to slide a screwdriver or similar tool into the rubber and smash the window. For those who pondered that it was because the windows are cheaper, i found the passenger window on the Pug cheaper to replace than the 1/4 window on the Mazda. Although the Nissan was even cheaper coz i just went down to the wreckers and pulled one out of a car for $15. sorted!

On a side note about the bags on the beach, i was with some kiting friends down at pinnaroo point in march and left a bunch of junk such as wallets camera's and car keys in the bag and as it was a pretty crappy day for kiting i was assisting in "board recovery" which meant that the bags were left alone for a long time. Nothing taken. not even touched. Oh, and i wasnt kiting because i havent learnt yet. I'm a hangglider pilot. Love Seabreeze.com!

It's rather sad to see so much writing devoted to a subject that has only one simple approach. You have to expect to see your things stolen and not get too attached to them. Lock you car, the windows will get smashed. Leave it unlocked and eventually those that check for unlocked cars will find it. Ask someone to watch your car for you, and they'll clean it out. Take down license plate numbers of suspicious cars and it will have been reported stolen. Try taking a Bhuddist approach. In fact, why not a Christian approach? Find out who has stolen from you and give him more of what he wants.

Yeah we went to woodies for a holiday, and we left to check the wind for literally 5 mins. Came back and there is a dude trying to braek in the car. We yelled and ran at him but before we got there he had allready broke the window grabbed a purse and bailed withhis boganfriend in there beat up como. There all skum, it's a pitty that people live like that in Australia. Poorly educated, and hooked up drugs. It's sad that it's 2% of Society that **** it up for the rest of us. Should oragnise I staged operation at Woodies, and catch the crooks. or beat the **** out of them. 1 of the two.

Put used condoms all over your dashboard and seats, leave a steamy poo on the bonnet and preferably front seat and dash. Fresh urine squeezed and sprayed daily over your door handles and windows is also a good deterant.
