I'm not sure what you mean by "religious undertones". I know in WW2 the Jews copped a bashing purely on the basis their religious/ethnic background. That wasn't a major cause of the conflict. The overt cause was the German invasion of other countries. There was nothing religious about the Japanese misbehaviour.
WW1 - no overt religious causes.
Korea - no religion
Vietnam - no religion
Can't think of any of America's wars being religious and they've had heaps of them.

There were lots of vicious conflicts in Europe in previous centuries that were religious. I think you'll find that these were hegemonic competitions. Its just that until recent centuries the church was the seat of political power. People fight about power and wealth. They use religion for group solidarity.

The current Moslem jihadism obviously owes a lot to religion but I suspect that if you look into it you will find that there is a lot more to it.

My take is that a religion is a documented process of think, eg a philosophy, ideology that attempts to answer primary questions and guide people.
Now since most people can't actually think for themselves, they have to adopt somebody else's way of thinking. And like in every other social environment you have leaders and followers.
Sometimes you get leaders who want to take over the world, and they're able to talk the people who can't think for themselves in to doing anything they want, even to such a degree that they subvert the original ideology... that's why you have branches.

Then of course you have those that can't think for themselves and aren't even aware of the ideology the profess to belong too.

And lastly but by no means least are those that can think, have been thinking and have been searching for answers to primary questions who happen across an ideology that resonates with what they have been thinking and it's a very enlightening experience for them.

Oh and everything in between to infinity.
