The only good thing about the tsunami was that it destroyed heaps of whaleing boats.

Maybe its time to let the Japanese know that windsurfers are closer to extinction than whales,,,,so maybe they could be the next deliciousy as near extinction seems to be the criteria.

rebuilding the boats and reviving the whaling & fishing industries will provide thousands of much needed jobs and help whole towns get back on their feet.

keep your emotive bull***t out of this. it's bad enough risking lives at sea because you think whales are cute and you want to play pretend war games. they are only spending the money on security because sea shepherd is causing a risk.

how about spending the millions it costs to throw paint at whalers on helping to rebuild japan instead? go and build some houses or schools. it would establish goodwill and in the process free up the money they have to spend on protecting their whaling fleet. or is that not fun enough?

SSCS will spend about 3 million of privately raised funds (raised under the guise of stopping this from happening)to try and stop the Japanese from WHALING ILLEGALLY in AUSTRALIAN TERRITORIAL WATERS. The Japanese whalers are spending a EXTRA $28 million aus dollars (that was given for them to help rebuild the country) that they were given to help build schools, houses and feed their people. Not sure if you read my post above but not one of the IRC whaling boats were damaged. Mate i don't think Whales are cute. Honestly i couldn't care less for them except that i believe and so do thousands of scientists that we should not be killing whales. Especially endangered ones.

With your attitude you probably have no issue with killing of any thing that lives. Have you got children mate? Wouldn't you like them to be able to see a whale one day?

if it's done sustainably there's nothing wrong with whaling.
the bottom line is that people think they are cute or intelligent or magnificent. there are more pressing environmental issues more deserving of the attention & money that ss attract.

Tsunami is a Japanese word, In English they are known as Tidal Waves, although not dependent on tides, it is some what of a misnomer but thats what we call them. To be consistent you should then be calling whales by their Japanese name 'Kujira'.

No charity organisation actually funds what they are said to, most charities are tax write offs for MegaCorp and the like, where they employ people for vast amounts of money and squander the remains on photo oppurtunities. Its all Showbiz.

How would the Cystic Fibrosis Association get money if i didn't help sponsor them, how would Miriam the young girl we sponsor in Thailand get her money if we didn't sponsor her, ( she writes constantly with my daughter same age and trust me she gets everything we send ), how would the orangatangs get financial help if people like me didn't send money every month. My 10 year old does fund raising for them directly. How would the SSCS crew go if it wasn't for my funds i send..All these i consider great investments and i take my investments serious. So i check them out first from top to toe and mate that is why i can say charity is not all about show biz

Your point was that Whaling was necessary for our existence, therefore good. The Holocaust, Bubonic plague and the destruction of the Dinosaurs were also necessary for our existence. It's the butterfly effect.

My point was nobody would be here if events in history were different, good or bad. Napoleon was just an example.

You argument is: 100 years ago whale oil was the best fine oil around in the world so it is alright for the Japs to kill whales to extract more oil now, I thought the fickers were so advanced in technology that now they would have products 1000x better and not derived of whale!

Whalers file lawsuit against Sea Shepherd.

Japanese whalers have filed a lawsuit in the United States in a bid to prevent "acts of violence" by Sea Shepherd activists during this year's hunt.

In a statement Japan's Institute of Cetacean Research (ICR), and Kyodo Senpaku Kaisha Ltd, which operates the whaling vessels, said they had filed the lawsuit to establish legal protection of their ships and crews.

"Sea Shepherd has made numerous attempts to foul ships' propellers with ropes, potentially placing the crews and vessels in extreme danger," the statement read.

It said last whaling season the hunt was cut short because of concerns for the safety of the crews and vessels.

"Unfortunately Sea Shepherd is escalating its acts of violence and this has left us with no choice but to file the safety-at-sea lawsuit," the whalers said on Friday.

Each year activists from the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society confront Japanese whalers in the waters around Antarctica.

They use weapons such as propeller foulers and stink bombs to frustrate whaling efforts.

In the past Sea Shepherd ships and Japanese vessels have collided, although both sides blamed each other for the strikes.

Spokesman for the whalers, Gavin Carter, told AAP from Washington that the lawsuit would only target violent activities, and not peaceful protest actions.

He said the lawsuit, filed in the US District Court in Seattle on Thursday (local time) did not seek monetary compensation from Sea Shepherd, but did seek a permanent stop to the activists' actions.

Each year Japan's whaling fleet heads south to the Southern Ocean near Antarctica to conduct so-called "scientific whaling".

The hunt is allowed under a loophole in the International Whaling Commission's ban on commercial whaling.

Speaking to AAP from on board a vessel off the coast of Western Australia, Sea Shepherd founder Paul Watson said he was not worried about the lawsuit, which names him personally.

He said it was frivolous and any US court that saw video footage of an incident last year - when a protest vessel was destroyed after a collision with a whaling ship - would dismiss the action.

Sea Shepherd activists were not aggressive nor did they break a single law, Mr Watson said.

"We are not down there protesting whaling, we are down there intervening against criminal activities," he said.

"We defend ourselves from being rammed, hit with water cannons, shot at, have concussion grenades and bamboo spears thrown at us, so yes, we defend ourselves," he said.

Mr Watson said the ships his organisation used were not owned by Sea Shepherd USA, nor were they US-flagged vessels.

"The United States government and courts have no authority over these ships so I don't know what they are hoping to achieve," Mr Watson said.
