The worst or Australian cities still craps all over anywhere overseas

Not necessarily so.

Watched a doco a while ago about a city in Brazil (sorry can't remember the name) and from memory I believe it has a larger population than any city in Aus and is so good that there are no cars in the CBD.

^^ so if it is larger than any of ours, how far do they have to drive to get an uncrowded wave?
Or go for a bushwalk
or mountainbike
or find a wide open space to sit and do fk all and hear the sounds of nothing?

^^^ Not sure about the uncrowded wave. That predicates a near coastal city.

All the rest the dwellers can do within the city.

Yes it is a radical departure from what we perceive as city living.

Edit:- Not sure but this might be the place I am referring to. Curitiba.

If you don't like it, you don't like it. So what.

Don't know how accurate this is but none of them are places I would like to live.

Gee, all these cities being voted most liveable and no mention of Yungaburra! (Yunga-what? most of you will ask)

I lived there for a while and found...
- zero property crime (nobody I knew had their car/house broken into, most did not lock them)
- neighbors who had no fences and were happy for the kids from each house to treat the combined yards as a semi-public park
- neighbors who would leave a basket of fruit on the door step just cos they noticed I had moved in
- neighbors who would help each other and make it a point to invite new comers to street parties, games nights etc
- no big supermarkets but plenty of roadside stalls for local produce
- THE best local markets
- very peaceful lakeside living (I used to walk down to my canoe and paddle amongst the platypus and wildlife before work in the morning)

So, when I hear people talk about the most liveable cities, I find it hard to be convinced that they are on the right track.
Melbourne, Sydney etc may have some really cool things to do/see, but living there?
Not for this little black duck!

Perth.

- Best climate
- Everything close
- Less than 1hr drive to beach for everyone - most people 20-30mins
- Less than 1hr drive to the bush for mountain biking, motorbike riding, pretty much anything that does not involve the beach is close
- 2 or 3 hr drive max to world class holiday locations

oi - Mark _australia....shhhhhhhhh

We had to move from the darn city as it was way too busy...but seriously ...don't
want anyone else coming over

Mark is a liar! do not believe all that bullshyte..... Sydney is the best place in OZ.... move there peeps! not in WA...... NSW has best waves, wind sun and blue sky every day, rains only at night, beer is free and money grows on trees! no kidding folks!

You're talking about a remote and isolated coastal town Mark, not a city.

Kowloon
sometimes-interesting.com/2011/06/28/kowloon-walled-city/

In 1987, its population numbered 33,000 within its 6.5-acre borders. The population density at its peak was 3.25 million people per square mile. To put that in perspective, Hong Kong as a whole (itself one of the most densely populated regions on Earth) has a population density of "only" 17,000 people per square mile.

Different city. This one really blew my mind. WELL worth a watch (10 mins not 3 fn hours). I think it was on ABC or SBS a couple of months ago.

^ Looks a bit like Elizabeth St. Melbourne each morning of this long weekend. Piss and spew and rubbish everywhere.

...and in Australia we bitch about which city has the better parking.

I'm a refugee from Sydney

My mate still there paid 1.1 million to live in a 2 bedroom terrace with Jets passing over every 4 mins.

You're f*&(*^ brain dead if you don't realise that Sydney is the worlds septic tank.

I now live in bogan central and it takes me 1 hr to get from my desk to being on the water at Woodies.

I'll take bogan Perth any day

I'd rather live in Mandurah than move back to Sydney (No offence Elmo et al)

If you wind or kite surf in Australia you should know Elliot Heads.

So for you this might be Australia's Most Liveable City.

I don't see most cities as 'liveable', more of a convenience...give me a small country town or city anyday. As for 1hr drive to 'blah', only 35mins drive to 'blah'...I can walk 5mins in one direction & be waist deep at the beach, another direction & I'm at the hospital, 10mins walk to work & to a couple of 'very' good restaurants, supermarkets & pubs.

Doors don't need locking (although I do anyways), surrounded by beaches within 15mins drive that face about 270degs, so a sail/surf/fish is always an option. Supplied artesian bore water - tastes crap, but no water restrictions, also high annual rainfall, so not an issue...weather is ordinary for most of it, but that makes work bearable and the good days are all the better.

Industry (port/smelter & associated trades) are strong so employment is still good. Pleasant people, friends & very laid-back lifestyle.

Sad thing is, school holidays get busy here (population doubles to 20k), so we go camping 45mins from here to a 'quieter' town (pop apx 500) on the river & beach estuary - fishing, mtb riding, canoeing/suping & of course bbqing & drinking.

You guys stay in the city, I'll stay here thanks.

Sydney's only like that cos everybody from Cow-loon moved over here... 15 years ago Perth was a 10 mansion 1st hick ville, where as Sydney was awesome.

And how ironic, off the back of the Chinese, Perth came out doing nicely.

The words livable and city really don't belong in the same sentence. Trafic jams are a complete waste of life. Why would anyone want to spend the majority of their recreation time drumming their fingers on a dashboard? It's nuts, but clearly some people must enjoy it.

I prefer to spend my time in the water, not staring at trafic lights so I'll stay where I am. :)

Because everyone else is doing it, it must be superior living.

I live 500kms south of perth in a "town" that has 40 thou in the city, probably over 100 thou in the shire. All your main shops, plaza's, take out and the rest. 25min drive in either direction lands you and your 4wd on the beach. Awesome coastline with a cove or beach to suit every wind direction within 40mins. Epic waves everywhere. Fishing top notch, by boat or land. No traffic lights. Work is always only 5mins drive. A traffic jam involves 5 cars and 45 seconds of stop time. A crowded spot means there is another human being there. Easter weekend, when the masses are everywhere, we went for a monster long drive ( hour and a half ) and had a pristine inlet and beach all to ourselves for 3 days, catching salmon and sharks right in front of camp. I even got the kayak a out in the perfect conditions.

All this on my doorstep, i must say, i actually pity all the folks that live in the rat race in the city, travelling 40mins to work, traffic jams, and not an uncrowded beach for miles.

Dont live in Canberra, its a hive of lazy self involved public servants, blabbing about community this, community that, its such a sickening wank. Canberra is really THE place to avoid and we're out of here as soon as we can. And yep, I was born here. Oh yeah, nearest beach is 1.5 hrs.
Perth is fab, the worlds most remote city, but fab in my opinion. Also, Kiama, but its not really a city. Maybe "the gong", its not bad.
Seriously, dont even visit canberra, you will be disappointed.

the thing about livin in the gong is the stink of the air

the worst thing about livin in the gong is the point where you don't notice it anymore

A bit harsh Revhead. But there is a noticable difference. A fellow I work with visits his girlfriend in Canberra on weekends. He's always blown away on Mondays when he reports back. Last time he stayed till Tuesday. " Runners everywhere? (lunch time joggers I presume) and not just running, they're really moving along. If we see someone running that fast down here we call the police"

Must be a while since you were here Doc. They've mostly fixed up the industrial emissions.

And we still don't have a proper footy stadium where members from other teams can go and watch their team play.
